Often used in Greek tragedies (plays)...the use of a character to exemplify another character as the 'better' - the role model.

What do we call that character? (the weaker one...)

Are you thinking of anything to do with the "-tagonist" terms?

Antigone.

Ismene is completely opposite in ideals - she thinks men are better, don't disobey law blah blah

She is used to contrast with Antigone and is the 'weaker' of the two. Like she has no other purpose in the play except to rebut Antigone and illustrate her 'ideal greek girl' ideals...lol.

Kind of like a scapegoat to highlight Antigone's 'better' ideals?? But scapegoat isn't the word -.-
