1. You need to mention film techniques at least a couple of times in your essay, eg. camera angles, Edie's white glove, all the smoke and fog, the sound of the ships' foghorns, the use of black and white, harsh lighting, using shadows, blinds, fences, the bird cage etc. to film through bars, which makes it seem like Terry's trapped.

2. You will need to have one solid body paragraph on Terry for almost every conceivable topic that they could throw at you. Other things that will need to be mentioned, generally speaking, are Friendly and his gang, Edie, Fr. Barry, Charley.

3. For a high mark, you need to show deep understanding and knowledge, so try and include comments on minor characters.

4. ALWAYS have a really clear introduction and conclusion, with at least 3 body paragraphs in between, with really clearly defined and separate ideas in each paragraph.

5. DO NOT summarise - if you find yourself writing "... then *blah blah blah happenned*, then ...."
then you are probably just retelling the story. The point is that you have to analyse.

6. Go and read the examiner's reports on the VCAA website and also find the assessment criteria so you know what the assessors are looking for.
I won the GAT: 49/50/50.
