Contour Map Scale

The distance between a certain Point D and a certain Point F on a contour map is 9.5cm on the actual contour map. Now, the scale shown on the contour map is 1:1000. In reality, would this mean that the distance between these 2 points is 9500cm or 9500m? So in other words, is the scale from cm to metres or cm to cm? Can we have a scale in which the units are different? I'm thinking cm to m for some reason but I'm not too sure.

This is part of question 3 in NEAP 2008 Exam 2 Trig Module.

I believe it would be 9500 cm, or 9.5 metres.

9500 cm = 95m

I don't think they do, they obviously didn't in this question but VCAA didn't make this one. Not certain though.

Yeah I think I remember that question actually.

Just looked at the answers for the exam and the 1:1000 scale is cm to cm, so 9.5cm = 9500cm = 95m.

So I guess it's just that the units will be the same for the scale, and if otherwise, they will probably tell you.
