Spoke to the faculty today, and I have one too few units available to do a major in both psych and dev bio. FFS looks like I'm stuck with genetics, might as well make the most of it and hope I get better at it pronto lol :-\

If it's just one unit, couldn't you apply to have one of your units un-counted? I'm not sure what the proper term for it is, probably discredited, but I have heard of people doing this before. Might just mean having to come back for one semester or overloading.

Yeah I was thinking about doing that with my MTH1020 unit from last year but given that I scored decently in it, it'd be risky to cut that grade from my academic record. And yeah, it'd keep me in undergrad for about an extra two semesters and i can't wait to finish up here and do honours already haha.

Nah, I guess I'll just have to tough it out, I might be lucky and enjoy the post-fundamental genetics units a lot more (which would make sense I suppose).

Wow, there's a way to discredit units? What's the process behind that? Cooool, never knew that was possible! Does that mean the unit won't show up on your transcript? Keeping in mind all options for potential fails/low marks in my future of this 5-year degree ahah :P

Hahaha anecdotally speaking, I've heard that it needs to be approved by the faculty for a proper reason (i.e. not poor grades) :P

Hey guys,

This is probably the most jaffy-est question: if I don't want to follow the degree plan, how do I go about mixing up my units? (basically, who do I contact? are there application forms/deadlines etc)

Thank-you  :) <3

I would've thought you could just do it without seeking permission or anything of the like, but you would have to seek advice from your faculty to ensure doing units in a different order wouldn't mess up meeting prerequisites for certain units and whatnot.

What Phy said.

I've already deviated from mine both semesters with the comm units, and the law side is even more flexible, really (once you do ILR and RAW).

I've been studying at Monash Caulfield really well the past few days late into the night as it is open until 12am. I saw a sign recently that said non-monash students won't be admitted into the library without a student I.D. card. Is this primarily at the entrance or will they be going around asking people for cards? If it is only entrance I wouldn't mind sneaking by with someone else :)

It's at the entrance but they ask everybody.

They do it for a reason btw, the Caulfield library isn't big and seating is tight enough as it is without all the extra people they get around exam time. If you're not a Monash student, do the Caulfield kids a favour and study somewhere else.

Yeah but it kind of sucks. Most people disperse at around 8pm. I'd be  happy to go at 8pm and leave at midnight. :( Oh well.

I can see how that's a deviation from the recommended course outline, but it's not exactly a deviation.
Uni bureaucracy is hard to overcome; you have to see a course advisor and get everything written down and signed.
One of the course advisors messed something up, to my advantage :3
That's what I interpreted the question to mean - not from the handbook or anything like that.

Dont bother with course advisers and course plans if you know what you're doing. Yes, they're helpful but those kind of services are more helpful if you have no idea whats going on or where you are going. If you put a few hours into learning the requirements and handbook + planning stuff out, you dont really need them.

Usually, all you *really* need to do is fulfil the requirements before you graduate. They go through a check-list to make sure you've done it all before you can graduate. In the interim, it doesn't *necessarily* matter how you get things done, long as they get done. Vital prerequisites are another matter though, no use doing a subject without its prerequisite if it heavily relies on that.

I was *technically* meant to do math in first year but i did it now (my 4th year). When they saw when i went in for something else, they were a little ticked off but there's nothing you can really do, especially if you plan to fulfil the requirement eventually. So, do what you like, long as you get things done eventually.

Having my standard late-semester existential crisis:

Finish undergrad then try for med

Or

Finish undergrad, do honours, then try for med?
