There are a few 24 hour general access labs in Caufield, you need to register online first. There is the science students lounge (guess who that's for), there's also the engineering computer labs (again, guess who that is for).

Otherwise, you'll find the libraries hours on their websites, generally they open when the university does (8am) and closing is variable based on the library (latest at Clayton is 12 midnight for the Matheson, it's sometimes extended during SWOTVAC and examination weeks).

Has anyone by any chance written solutions to CHM1011 past exam papers? I wanna start getting used to the questions but there's no point if I don't know what I'm getting wrong...

It's a bit too early asking about 2nd semester timetables but when Allocate says it's not first come first serve, i have a feeling it is? During orientation i made a post asking how to get my 1st preference even when they were like 300%. I pretty much use the strategy, no clashes whatsoever, just my 1st preferences ended up being the really full ones and did not get any of my 1st preference. So i think maybe i could've got all my first preferences if i done it earlier (before it was 300%) so it's basically first come first serve but they explicitly said it wasn't? What are your thoughts? I've learnt my lesson and when this allocate opens for sem 2 i think i'll go about it as a first come first serve basis.

All I know it, I am never picking 8am or 9am lectures again. LOL

There are no thoughts, it's programmed to not be first come, first serve. I dont mean to come off as harsh but that's literally how the system is programmed  :D

It's just pure luck. If its 300% overloaded, 1/3 people will still get a spot in that class. The algorithm also ranks people according to preferences and clashes as well. It's possible some people had clashes and had a better chance of getting the spots than you. The strategy is to use clashes, so, i think that also may have been your issue.

To summarise: It's more or less totally random whether you get a spot in an overloaded class. True first come, first serve, would be to allow signup at Monday 9am like Melbourne uni does. Who ever hits the button first gets in. Allocate is far better in that there is a lag time in entering your preferences and the program sorting them once it closes.

I've never actually gotten a horrible timetable so maybe i've just been on the really lucky side of those odds. A few times i haven't gotten a few of my preferences but it happens. The university is simply bursting at the seams and they've just gotta try ration all the places out.

I intentionally made all my preferences except number 1's clash and for one of my tutes it just didn't allocate me, so there's no 100% way to be allocated to what you want (i did get the tute I wanted by emailing). I also did my preferences within 12 hours of it opening, with no options >100% full so that isn't foolproof either.

It is WAY too early to start on practice exams. Just focus on getting the course done, first.

Don't worry - you'll have plenty of time to get used to practice exams.

Haha, yeah I figured it was too early. However, uni chem is understandably not my main priority, so I'd prefer to (really) space out exam prep - I'm still not 100% with molecular orbital theory!

Thanks Euler

Agreed.

Also be aware, that the practice exams you  have currently may not be reflective of the current study design, unless they are released officially by your Unit conveyor are placed on your moodle page, there are normally 2 of these.

I would be keeping those exams til at least Swotvac, for now you should have your tute/workshop material to keep you occupied.

I got a D for my lab..semi disappointed and kind of frustrated..so so close !

Say if I fail the midsem (10%), does that mean that it's literally impossible for me to get a HD for the unit ? I'm so confused how this works. Any help is greatly appreciated :)

It depends, how much was the lab worth?

If the lab is worth 10% and you got a D, i assume you got 70%. So, you got 7% of your total mark for the semester there.

If the mid-semester is worth 10% and you get 0% (highly unlikely) then your maximum mark for the subject is 87% assuming you get 100% in everything else.

More likely, assuming you just get 50% on your mid-sem, you get 5% to your mark for the subject. Your maximum possible mark is (10+10)-(7+5)-100.

I realise that's probably insanely unclear. Basically we need to know how much your lab was worth too.

If you were so close than I don't think it would affect the result that much.

I doubt you're going to fail the midsem either Anna :)
