Even if this happened I doubt much would change--languages taught in high school to those who do not wish to learn it will never work. The information just goes in one end and comes out the other.

Agreed...
Although it is a really good idea, it could never happen here in Australia.
Whereas, learning in english in China for instance... its compulsory and although the majority of people forget the language in adulthood, there isn't so much resistance amongst students themselves (i know this from personal experience) - because they know of the potential of speaking it...
I'm generalising of course...   :-X

Generalising, it is a good idea, but I doubt students should be prevented from speaking languages other then those of the Asian region. I personally would not find that much use of a language, and would look for one such as Italian or Greek from personal choice.

Abolish VCE 11 and 12 English for a LOTE!
‎"We divert our attention from disease and death as much as we can; and the slaughter-houses and indecencies without end on which our life is founded are huddled out of sight and never mentioned, so that the world we recognize officially in literature and in society is a poetic fiction far handsomer and cleaner and better than the world that really is."

Well they could offer an Asian language and a language from elsewhere, like my school (Chinese and French) but I realise not every school would have the resources to do this.  Plus, learning two languages is STUPID.

Not to mention impractical. Even one language won't get through to most people if they don't actually take it seriously.

But if they do take it seriously, it would be a massive asset to them... especially in future careers...!
Not many people realize that unfortunately...

But those people would simply elect to do the LOTE from their own free will (given that it's possible, and doing mandarin and japanese certainly are outside of school).

Rubbish. Why don't they focus on reforming VCE English? Most year 12 graduates cannot even spell properly or write coherent sentences.

That's why most people from overseas can pick up languages easily. They are taught how to learn languages properly. Here, kids are thrown in the deep end and told to regurgitate essay after essay which literally has no real meaning to the student.
