New heinemann physics book for 2012?

Hi,

There is a new book for physics: Heinemann Physics Enhanced. Is it the same as the older one (3rd edition I mean)? Should I buy the new or not? It costs about 80 bucks and I would rather buy secondhand one unless it is important.

I haven't seen the Heinemann enhanced, but there wouldn't be major content differences. Why? Because the study design hasn't changed. For that reason, there wouldn't be any important changes.

There might be a few different changes, maybe a few different questions etc. but I don't think it'd make much of a difference. The textbook questions are rarely very similar to exam-style questions anyway.

Also, Heinemann has a habit of releasing these "enhanced" editions, while changing minimal content. I suspect this is just another one of these "enhanced" editions that doesn't change much at all.

I would assume it is no different.

During chemistry this year some students had the enhanced edition whilst others had the non-enhanced (original or w/e).

The only differences we could find were the alteration of images which had little-to-no application to the course and the translation of text to different places i.e text may be on page 100 in one book and in 101 in the other because of the different images.

If I was you I would just buy the second hand one like I did for chemistry, but it's up to you ;)

Yeh throughout the whole chem book besides the images, we could only find one paragraph that was reorganised with the addition of simple fact. That was it, there was not really any different.

This just consolidates on my thoughts that they just call it enhanced to rake in the $$$ :-\

Is there still a non-enhanced 'first-hand' version for 2011/2012? Because if that does exist I would advise you to invest your money in that rather than the enhanced version if you're unable to get it second hand, yabbaboo.

My friends have it... lol, it's freaking the exact same, like no jokes..

The only difference: Front cover is now YELLOW instead of red.. but it's the same picture (skateboard wheel).
Pictures are tilted/changed..
Questions are the exact same ololol.

Just a general tip for books:
If it's a new edition, then there will be new questions/new study design(?)
If it's 'enhanced', then they'll tilt pictures/change covers just to make some more $$.

Which Physics textbook would you guys say is the best for Unit 3/4? My booklist says to get the Nelson one but the teacher was like he doesn't care which one we get, just get a textbook to fall back on.

We've discussed this to death in many other topics such as this one: Best physics textbooks? among others, so I don't want to completely relight this debate again - hence I've tried to avoid merely re-stating my opinion on which is the best book. After all which textbook is better is of course a heavily opinionated thing and everyone will have their own opinion. What material helps you understand the best varies for each person.

Anyway, it's pretty clear from my other posts that I reckon the Nelson book is pretty damn good - and I most definitely think that it's questions are superior to Heinemann (though for some topics, Heinemann can explain it's theory in an easier to understand manner - they both balance each other out).

But in the end though, the textbook questions are only good for getting your head around the concept initially. You should be moving on from them pretty quickly once you understand a concept - as none of the textbooks represent exam-style questions well at all (yes - this includes the so called "exam-type question" sections in the books).

Theory wise - there's some pretty cool concepts you cover, and just one resource cannot allow you to get your head around a the concept. There really isn't one single resource that explains all the concepts well. More often than not, I had to look at multiple resources - whether that was another textbook or more often than not, websites on the internet - in order to fully grasp the idea at hand.

It really shouldn't matter too much on what book you choose to purchase as you can always access the others elsewhere e.g. local library and etc.

Cheers, I think I'll end up just getting the Nelson one.
