Kwong Lee Dow program equivalent?

I applied for Melbourne University's Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholar's Program this year and was unsuccessful (I was stupid in my application by discussing career paths not well supported by the university). I was wondering if there were any other sorts or programs or competitions I could apply for from other universities.

You shouldnt stress about those things.
But if you top your school academically in Year 11, you could win the Monash Prize which is worth $1,000 plus another $1,000 if you decide to go to uni there.

TBH there's not all that much to be gained from the KLD program. The Monash Prize is much better in terms of money, I really wish I knew it existed before they gave it out, I would have actually tried to get better marks in year 11 :S
I won the GAT: 49/50/50.

Do you know whether they judge a student's academic ability purely based on reports or consider other things such as academic competition results as well?

^ I believe it's simply on reports, the girl at my school who got it last year had straight A+s but there were other kids with more impressive comp results, eg. one who qualified for the Chem Olympiad Training Camp, myself and 3 others who went to IOL, a few maths comp winners, etc. In fact, the kid who won it at my school got 46 in Methods last year, and 8 other year 11s got higher scores than her, which also leads me to believe that it's based off reports alone. (Physics was my undoing, I never handed in about half of the pracs and got a C on my report :S)

KLD is pretty crap in general, but it's quite nice for those like me :D. If I get a 90 ATAR and meet the pre-reqs for biomed/comm, I can get in.
But yeah, Monash Prize ftw.

To be honest, judging by the way your school has done it in the past, it's not necessarily based on the school report. The guy who got it last year, although incredible in mathematics competitions (you know who it is ;) ), he certainly didn't have the best year 11 report. But I mean...it was just so obvious that he deserved to get it.
I think it's just really difficult to decide based on grades (and the fact that people do different subjects and/or number of subjects) who the best student is, so there's some space to play around with it and just decide who the best student is.

Also @Stick...don't stress about the KLD thing. Plenty of great students don't get them - unless you're severely worried about cut-offs for courses into a new generation degree at melbourne uni, you wouldn't see much benefit out of being a KLD scholar.

That's exactly why I'm wanting to know if there are more programs. Without sounding arrogant here, I do expect an ATAR in the 90s but for some of the courses I am considering, I'm going to require an 98 or 99. Of course, I'll do my absolute best to achieve that score on my own merit but I'd really appreciate taking part in a program that would allow me to enter such courses with a lower ATAR. By nature, I'm a very anxious person, so having it would give me peace of mind.

Makes sense.

In my school several students were nominated to apply and they were selected on academic performance.
By after the applications are in, the university does not select on academic results only, but they look at a range of things, and in particular leadership qualities.

This is fair, because not every student is the same. Some do nothing but devote 100% of their time to study, while others will be school leaders, participate in sport, music etc and go to all the 18th birthday parties because when your friend invites you to his 18th you cant say I got a SAC on Monday which is more important than your stupid party. Its not the right thing to do. So you try to fit it all in.

Its difficult to compare students. A 99.95 ATAR student is good but so is a 99 ATAR who is also School captain, footy and cricket firsts, stage plays and bands and turns up to his mates birthday parties.

Does this prize exist in every school?
Arrgh I wish I could go back in time and treat year 11 more seriously... fuck.

So other than this Monash Prize, there's no other programs? I was hoping there would be one. :/
