2nd year Bsc subject combinations?
« on: December 11, 2011, 08:26:29 pm »

Hello!
Just need advice on which semesters/ combination of subjects would 'ease' off the study load.

Im planning on doing the following subjects:

Sem 1:
Research-based Physiology
Principles of Human Structure
Human Physiology
Possibly: Music psychology, do you guys recommend any other breadths? still not sure if music psychology would be my breadth this sem

Sem 2:
Biochemistry
Techniques in Molecular Science
Food nutrition
Breadth: Drugs in society

For those of you who have done the combination - anatomy, physiology and biochemistry. Do you think this structure would ease off the workload? I put biochem away from physiology and anatomy because i've heard 2nd years saying how intense and time consuming it is.

And also about research based physiology should i do that after i finish studying the subject human physiology or in conjunction with it in sem 1?

Thanks Guys!

That looks fine. I wouldn't change anything.

Speaking from my own experience which almost mirrors that.

I would change it to:

biochemistry in semester 1
research physiology to semester 2

Why? Research physiology 'strongly recommends' background knowledge in human physiology (sem1), and techniques in molecular science says the same about biochemistry.

The content of Human Physiology is definitely ahead of Research. But 2/3rds of the way through the semester the two subjects will become insync. During swot vac you only need to study for Human Physiology as there will be a complete overlap with Research. Therefore, swot vac will be less stressful.

Biochemistry can be completely prior or concurrently, it doesn't matter because the Biochemistry course has been modified so that you are learning concepts ahead of the respective Technique practicals. I think it is advantageous to do it concurrently because the theory is fresh in your mind before you complete the relevant practical in techniques.

Hence, stick with the list that you have :P

EDIT: Doing Techniques and Research in the same semester will increase your workload for that semester considerably. Both subjects require ALOT of work consistently during the semester as internal marks are weighted highly.

I guess in true uni fashion, crammers will most likely benefit from having similar subjects to cram for before exams. :P

That's True.

The Research/Human Physiology Combo is definitely similar. But you probably can't get away with studying just Biochem and thinking that it will cover Techniques. They have completely different content in the theory exams.

Whilst, setting the subjects out this way will make it a tad less stressful. If you study consistently and are up to date with your lectures constantly then that is the answer to easing off your workload before swotvac and prior to assessment.

Im also agonising about human phys/research based phys orders.

At the moment its

S1 Anatomy, Biochem, Breadth

S2 Both Phys, Breadth

vs

S1 Anatomy, Phys, Breadth

S2 RBP, Biochem, Breadth

I emailed the coordinator about taking both concurrently, no reply as of yet.

EDIT: OP, I cant comment on music psych (Peedles can) but I will recommend Music and Health

Music Psychology and Music and Health are very similar, if not the same. I even had a look at some of the Lecture slides that my friend had for Music and Health and I reckon the content was very very very similar. Music Psychology might be a tad more time consuming because you need to attend the lectures in order to answer the weekly quizzes (ie. Lectopia for the Week 3 Lecture will not be released until Week 3 Quizzes have closed). 4 questions each question is worth 1 % of your overall grade. Unless you do the subject with alot of friends and work together on them.

Where as you can easily get a H1 in Music and Health without needing to attend the lectures. Even though they take attendance which doesn't count to your grade. But if you get a 79 or something and co-ordinator believes that they can push it up to an 80. Then they will look at your attendance to see if you have attended every lecture as evidence that you deserve yo get a boost. This is what a friend told me who did Music and Health Sem 2 2011.

I wouldn't say 'easily'

I think so. You could write the essays at the start of semester without needing to attend the lectures. Which you could refine slowly during the course of the semester. Your ability to do well on the essay is independent of whether you attend/absent from the lectures.

By easily I mean i can't think of another subject where you are able to do this without the aid of the lectures/recorded lectures.

I objected to you saying 'easily' and 'H1', you dont have to attend any lectures for any subject and still do well if you know how (as long as lectures are put online). For this subject in particular it was advantageous to attend because the marking scheme was discussed (not on the LMS) and instructions where given explicitly relating to the manner in which your essays were written (this is more important for the 2nd essay).

I will write a review if I have time later.

Well the majority of people who complete Music and Health/Music Psychology will agree that compared to other breadths/subjects the assessment is easy and hence easy to get a H1. A sufficient criteria for both subjects is detailed clearly on the LMS. In Music and Health 4 Example essays (scored relatively high) are mounted onto the LMS at your disposal.

Of course we also need to appreciate, there will be a minority that think otherwise.
