Thushan, you are 18 now, life is your decision. As nacho has said say no, it's not as if you are going to slack off this year (or ever). You know what you are doing. You need a break, you've earned it, you derseve it. Everyone is going to have to stand up against/make choices their parents don't like at one stage in their life, this is where to start Thushan. Good Luck and Happy 18th Birthday! :) (I'm guessing 18 right?)

Never works on mum.

Guess she's right though...its about time I knuckle down and NOT WASTE MY TIME THAT I WILL NEVER GET BACK *parrots what was drilled to me over the last year*

*offering of sympathy*
parents just want the best for you, I guess. :\
But happy birthday anyway! :)

and my mum does that too.. i just make it clear that there are 3 dimensions to health; social, mental and physical and if she wants me to perform well, I need to also have some interaction with friends. :D (i love hhd)
Happy enough after one hell of a year.

:D nacho

i dont know what i got into yet!
go for it, i dare you to stand up for yourself and free yourself from the manacles of curry parents (or at least make a start)
look your mum dead in the eye and say 'no'
then start playing tetris in front of her
then if things get dramatic, stand your ground and in the end she'll feel wrong (i think)

Um...can't do that. Tried that before. Got ugly. Very ugly. REALLY ugly. Don't want to go through that again.

Woah, thats a bit harsh from your mother. A year 12 graduate deserves a long break till University commences.

hey man
the way i see it is, let things get ugly, what's the worst that could happen?
and if something really bad does happen, you're completely free (maybe :D)
It's only after we've lost everything that we're free to do anything - Tyler Durden
surely couldn't be worse than being forced to study med textbooks before offers have even arrived
(i see nothing wrong with studying before offers arrive, but that's if it's on your own will, you dont seem happy atm)

You're an adult now - I think your Mum is stuck in VCE mode and has forgotten to switch to holiday mode. Gee, today my parents bought me a diamond necklace for finishing VCE with a good ATAR/late 18th birthday present. Makes me feel very grateful. If they tried to pull this over on me, I'd give them a flat out no. Priorities - sort them out.

EDIT: I think you need to talk to your Mum - it's your life, you're an adult, and studying now seems absolutely pointless. You did amazingly for VCE and deserve a break. And how exactly is that building valuable skills etc. for being a Dr?

While it's important to respect your parents wishes, be assertive in letting them know YOUR own wishes, especially as you're an adult now. You need to break out of the cycle sooner or later - so why not now? Surely they don't expect to be forcing you to go to work when you're thirty? They should understand what you want and know where to draw the line, and maybe they just need a bit of pressure from you to get this. :)

Oh yeah solution: tell her to stop nagging you and threaten her with submitting an irregular offer for an arts degree or something
vce: english, methods, spesh, chemistry, physics, geography.
