Monash University MBBS

Hey everyone,

I was just discussing university with my parents and I want to study Medicine at Monash University.

Can someone please give me a timeline of how many years I need to undertake study and internship before I can start working as  GP?

My friend seems to be under the impression that I need to study the 5 year MBBS course, undertake 2 years of internship then go back to university for 6-10 more years of study before I can start working as a GP. Can anyone please confirm of verify his claims?

Thanks

you need to undertake 5 years at Monash under the MBBS course, before undertaking 1 year internship. now after this you have two options:

#1: undertake 2-3 years of residency (mind you, you're still getting paid for this work, same with internship, you get paid throughout it), where you work in the hospital. after these years, you apply for specialising colleges (in your case, for the gp one) every year until you get a place. once you get a place, you need to undertake 3 years training (again, this isnt just unpaid work/study, you do get paid for it!)

#2: once you're out of internship, instead of doing 2-3 years residency, few people may be offered a place in the specialising colleges, so obviously this would save a lot of time. i hear the specialising colleges (including the one to prepare you to be a gp) do reserve some places for people straight out of internship.

while they say studying medicine is a lot of years of study, it's also work while you study, so you get paid etc., you just have to be always learning :)

I think to become a gp the bare minimum number of years is 1 year internship, then 3 years post grad training (so 9 years in total). To become a gp and a pyschiatrist I think 1 year of internship is enough ie. you don't have to become a resident and that the racgp will accept you (assuming you're good enough in their selection criteria). You can go back to uni and do your masters of medicine but it is in no way compulsory or needed. There's some good information here: http://www.racgp.org.au/Content/NavigationMenu/educationandtraining/Generalpracticecareer/pathwaytoGP_flyer.pdf
