my general advice about timtabling:

1) Put your tutes early in the week. You cover last week's materiel in tutorials and it's better to get one topic out of the way before getting too into new material otherwise you're trying to learn lots of stuff constantly.

2) Don't cram all your subs together, spread them out during the day, this means you are at uni for longe each day. This is what you want, you want breaks in between classes to hang with new people you met in the previous tute/lecture, and time to chill and catch up with old friends. Also if you can get an hour free before each tut-always handy to catch up on any tute work you were meant to do during the week. Also free time gives you time to go to consults.

3) Make sure you make sure you have time to get form class to class-the uni campus is quite big and running across it is not fun early in the morning with a bag, look at a map of the uni when doing your timetable

More specifically for acinod, all three apply, you're timetable is a bit cramped, each to their own, but seeing as you finish at 12 most days you can afford to loosen up your timtable a bit. Also number 3 particularly applies to you, you've got some crazy distances between some of you lectures, e.g. Copland and the spot, copland and the law building, the spot and the asia centre, be away that crossing grattan street takes forever, the light cycle lets pedestrians cross every 3 minutes and you have about 5 second to cross the road before it goes green for cars again. Note that this is just my advice and you're perfectly entitled to timetable how you want, it's just how i would do it.

With tip 1, the only tutorial I can have earlier is the accounting one on wednesday and the economics one on tuesday. However if I move the accounting one, I will only be going to uni on wednesday for one subject and that is chinese. I can move the economics one but that means putting it at 8am on Tuesday or later in the day on Monday. Though I guess the latter is achievable?

With tip 2, I guess this is a good point. Seems like my timetable is super packed so I finish all my subjects in the morning with no breaks. And with no breaks, I kind of realized I wont have anytime to talk to people from the previous lecture afterwards.

With tip 3, I thought every subject finished 5 minutes early and started 5 minutes late? But yea I agree with Russ.

On the other hand, I made a crazy timetable before this and obviously it's unrealistic and stupid but check it out if you haven't seen it :P (least I put my tutes early in the week)

Where are you getting all the times/locations for your lectures and tuts?

Looking at that timetable above, there are so many blanks WHAT DO YOU GUYS DO???? :O

I'm year 12 and I intend to study commerce at Melb Uni. Sorry for thread-jacking but what does it take to become an actuary? :( I'm also considering this... I'm one of those kids who really likes maths but aren't as good as those crazy asian (sorry for stereotyping) kids who are crazy at maths!

I heard there's a huge drop out rate :( what do people usually take on instead? An apartment near the uni or not?

*The awkward moment when you're asian and you realise you're not good at anything*

Again, sorry acinod for thread-jacking.

Particularly actuarial studies since it's not really your typical commerce degree. :P

haha you would be surprised how short that 10 minutes gets when you stop to chat with people you know-always happens when you're running late  :P but yeah, no fair enough, it must just be me that's fat and too lazy to move fast :P

Where are you getting all the times/locations for your lectures and tuts?

if you go to the handbook entry of each subject and there should be a 'show timetable' link on the subject page

it's not a stereotype if it's true :P

You don't have to be crazy at maths. If you enjoy maths that is easily good enough. Not to make this an arbitrary line, but generally if you're looking at ~43 raw in spech you should be fine, having said this i know people that got less than this and still have been coping fine. Not you have to get a 38+ raw in spech to do the accelerated maths path, but i know people who ahve done the lower maths path way, it's doesn't really hinder you at all and again i know people that did this and coped fine. Don't think that being a math god like TT or other of the VN math legends means that you can't do actuarial, you should defintiely give it a go.

In terms of alternate majors, if you switch after 1st year you can go into any major you want. If you switch at the end of 2nd year you can go into eco/finance if you've done intemediate microeconomics. In terms of the most popular major that actuarial 'dropouts' take up is accounting/finance at the end of 1st year.

Also it's not so much you're not good at anything as you just haven't found out what you enjoy doing, case in point every single arts student :P But seriously, chilllax, very few people know what they want to do straight out of highschool, just do what you enjoy and you'll find what you enjoy and be good at it soon enough, to be honest i'm not sure what i want to do at all either.

Hmm I wanted to remake my timetable but there doesn't seem to be a timetable for Chinese in 2012. I remember I assumed I was going into CHIN10007 because that's the post-VCE stream so I found the timetable. However, there doesn't seem to be a timetable for CHIN10007 or any of the other chinese subjects. I checked the 2011 timetable for CHIN10007 but it isn't familiar with the one I saw when the 2012 handbook first came out.

Guess I can't make my timetable now? It better come out soon, when do we get to make our timetables? Is it after offers come out or after the compulsory session at Melbourne Uni I've been hearing about?

Also apparently for Chinese there's some kind of placement test and the interview is held on 22nd February so it seems like there's still a month's wait to finalise what Chinese subject I'm even going into...maybe that's when the timetables come out...

Ultimately it seems that I'm going to have some issues making my timetable...
