what do you do with a biomed degree if you're unsuccessful?
2010: TNT (39)
2011: English (42) | Bio (39) | Chem (35) | Jap (35) | Methods (36)|

ATAR: 95.50 ( i actually got my prediction! :D)

Just wondering if anyone knows about the chances of getting in via Access Melbourne, what kind of scores would you need?
Dream Course:Graduate Medicine
Backup Option: Buy a fishing boat and become a fisherman[/s] - Vic government not giving out commercial fishing licences! :(
Current Option: Science @ MelbUni

As always it depends on your circumstances but unless they're very significant then not substantially lower. The MD is very competitive and you get Graduate Access applicants with very high scores. Don't bank on GA getting you in, try to do that yourself :P

okay so in conclusion, from what i've gathered in this thread, you need
1. A high GPA apparently 6.6 would suffice
2. A GAMSAT score sitting around 65 or above
3. A good interview, or should i say interviews because it is a multi mini system consisting of 8 stations
4. have completed biomed or science which is no problem with the pre req subjects.
Methods cas 43 --->~47 (2010)
Specialist 39--->~50
English 41--->~40.4
German 38--->~46.7
Chemistry 36--->~40.5
Physics 42--->~44.5       Aggregate 192.8

Something I don't understand - all those who receive 99+ are guaranteed a full-fee place into the MD should they so choose it. There are 400 people in Biomed who have all received above 99, not to mention ~20 (guessing) in Science who all want to do the MD.

Some, but not many, will get a CSP place. The others, however, wont, and there are only 80 full-fee places. I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest that at least 80 of these 400 or so people would succumb to the full-fee option. As a result, how can Melb Uni possibly make this kind of promise?
VCE 2010-2011:
English | Philosophy | Latin | Chemistry | Physics | Methods | UMEP Philosophy
ATAR: 99.95

2012-2014: BSc (Chemistry/Philosophy) @ UniMelb

Currently taking students for summer chemistry and physics tutoring! PM for details.

There are 180 students with 99+ in biomed, not 400. Given that they will graduate about 300, you'd expect that to drop a bit, perhaps to 140 or 150. Then given that a substantial amount will receive offers to the MD, you could take it down to 100 with the guarantee. Given that other universities offer medicine and that most people don't want to take on a 300k debt just to stay at UoM, I think they'll get under the cap fairly comfortably. Given that they have more leeway with FFPs than CSPs, they can also just create a few more places

1 and 2 were for the 2012 admissions cycle. I would encourage you to aim higher because in 2015 there will be a significant jump

Ahh yes, of course - I forgot that clearly-in does not equate to "minimum cut-off", and forgot about SEAS students and the like. That seems to work then!

What's happening in 2015? Just wondering.

i THINK he's suggesting this year level is mega competitive and UoM MD is extremely popular, hence even more competition.
Indications of this are -> Inflated UMAT scores, inflated ATAR cutoffs (?) and higher average scores on NAPLAN
2010 - Chinese
2011 - English Biology Chemistry Further Methods
2012 - UQ Bachelor of Dental Science I

Wouldn't that suggest a gradual rise in cutoffs, rather than a significant jump?

Mm dont think so, seeing as it refers to one specific year level only..

Mm ok, but then why is this year so much more competitive than any other year? There must be some reason..

Chancellors guarantee reduces places by about 40-50. So it will be much more competitive. Also that GAMSAT score, what %ile did that equate to?
