I'm from Geelong and need to catch a train up for the UMEP welcome day tomorrow, I'm fine with catching a train to Southern Cross, but beyond that, I'm clueless...

From Southern Cross station, train to either Melbourne Central or Flinders Street, then take any tram on Swanston St up to the Uni (i.e. North).

Does the train stop at North Melbourne by any chance? If it does, get off there and catch the 401 shuttle bus. Goes straight to UoM and takes about four minutes!

You could just take the train from Southern Cross to Melbourne Central and then take the Swanston St Tram which stops near Grattan St which is right in front of Melb Uni (I think there are more ways than this but this is the only one I know haha :) )

Thanks! Will I need to get a ticket or a metcard or something before getting on?

I used to go to uni high, so my way was:
1) Train to Flinders or MC (so for you, you might want to take a connecting service from Southern Cross)
2) Take the #19 tram (Elizabeth St) and take the second or third stop after the massive roundabout (depending on whereabouts UoM you want to go) OR take any number of trams going to UoM from the Swanston St exit of Flinders/MC :)

The Bus is also an option, but I'm not too familiar with that (although there is a free tourist bus that goes close to UoM)

With the 401 bus, I think you will need a zone 1 ticket, BUT the bus driver will not sell them, so you will need one before going on. So, obviously you will need to buy one at Southern Cross :)

VLine tickets cover Zone 1 and 2, so he can get on the bus fine .
