how do they take attendance at uni?

Lectures aren't compulsory. You come when you please.

Some tutorials aren't compulsory so same applies.

Most pracs and workshops require attendance. Because sometimes the attendance to the Practicals/Workshops themselves are part of the hurdle assessment (80% for example). If you fail to attend 80% of the practicals, you will receive an automatic fail grade irrespective of how well you do in your other assessment components. In this case, they will mark your name off at the start of class. Like "rolls" in homeroom back in high school :D

It depends on the subject; languages require a 80% attendance rate.

Yeah lectures in languages can be different--in one of the jap subjects I did, attendance was taken in lectures.
