I am posting this on behalf of someone else who has asked for AN"s advice on the matter.

Hi guys,

I'm entering Biomedicine in 2012.

My 2011 ATAR was: 98.15

I described the following in my SEAS application,

-I receive the full amount for Youth Allowance
-My mother receives FTB-Part A
-My mother suffers from depression
-I move houses every weekend between divorced parents yet receive no income from my father
-My friend passed away in year 12

Yet I wasn't offered an Access scholarship. I just don't understand what kind of applicant they were looking for? I've seen people get them with way way less than what I have and a lower ATAR.

Is there anything I can do to appeal/do you have a contact I can enquire about?

I received scholarships to all other universities on my preferences but Melbourne.

Thanks, the money is truly needed for my education.

Depends how well your friend also wrote in response to the application and provided evidence to support those statements. If s/he did this incorrectly, s/he would have been overlooked by the assessing board who hand out the Access Scholarships. Keep in mind, ~160 are awarded a year. Contact the University though and ask.

(I was lucky enough to get one for my own personal reasons.)
