Can you drop out of a course within the first couple of weeks??

For hypothetical reasons....of course..

Like you don't like it, or you know you're going to fail dismally etc etc :D

And can you then just pick up another course..(of course, also having to catch up)

Or do you must have to wait until mid year and apply through VTAC?

Technically, you can drop out of your course any time. There's no stopping you.  I could do it right now if I wanted to.  It really depends when you withdraw from your course and if it's pass the census dates, then you'll still have to pay for the subject(s), or "financially liable" as they call it.

Back to the original question, if you pull out in the first couple of weeks, you'll have to wait a whole semester before commencing a new course.

If it's mid year transfer from B.Com to B.Sci at UoM, then you will have a high chance of getting in since they'll most likely look at your ATAR.

when transferring internally, how much weight is put on your uni grades in semester 1 vs. your atar?

also, is there a limited quota in transferring? as in, do one have to hope that someone drops out of their desired course in order for them to free a space and get in or is it sort of guaranteed if good grades + atar higher than clearly in?

YES.

mid year, it's predominately your atar they look at, not to mention, if there are any drop outs. But during mid-ear, the number of spaces is really restricted, so it might be unlikely to got a spot.

end of year, there would be more spaces, but at this point, they look at your grades...more so than your atar. knowing me, i'm going to suffer in my first year in uni, so im relying heavily on my atar to get me through!

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-.

so, do they actually rank people who want to transfer by their atars and then move them to their intended courses?

say, 5 people drop out from commerce, do they take the top 5 atars of those who want to get into commerce from all first year degrees and place them in?

this is seeming really bleak to me as well actually, despite decent atar.

They look at both your atar and uni marks together.
If you get below the clearly-in atar (ie. 95.45 for commerce) then you'll have to have higher uni marks to 'bring up' and compensate for your atar.

i'm transferring to commerce though, not science. and because you're dropping out you may actually be helping me to get a spot. :P

also, the difference between your atar to the science clearly-in is higher than the difference from my atar to the commerce clearly-in. i don't know if this makes a difference or i'm just being really pedantic.

If you're transferring to Commerce, why didn't you do a 'irregular offer'? You're ATAR is above the clearly in and you might've been offered a spot depending on vacancies. I don't know whether you still can however, but it would probably be good to look into.

Just a question..if i do decide to drop out and i start a different course, i have to start as though i'm a first year, correct? However, it might not be a "full" year, because i may have done some subjects which can be cross-credited across the degree correct?

Yeah that's right. If you change courses within the same uni then chances are you will be able to credit all 4 subjects from first semester.

alll 4? wow..but i dont think so. commerce and science first semester subjects are different...so i'm not sure if you can cross-credit them though...it would be awesome though :D

reckon there's a high chance i could transfer midyear from commerce to science with 95.5 atar? :D
