Worthy of a lock soon I think :)

Objection.

  • Avoid chatting to another user in a thread. Public discussion boards are not the place to have one-on-one IM-styled conversations. Excessive chatter may cause the thread to be locked and offenders to be warned/banned.

I don't really think we're doing this :P I mean, this threads purpose is chatter. So if it were excessive, it's a good thing right? :P.. I did make a curry thread to avoid freaking out others, but sometimes we brown people just can't help ourselves okay???? Gosh, I thought you'd understand. :D

I don't even know why I looked this up haha.

Objection overruled.

The first sentence is not an excuse. The second and third don't justify anything either.

This isn't a thread to just increase your post count and talk about random stuff. Take that to separate threads (like that curry thread).

I will lock this if I have to.

And because we like quoting rules here, I'll leave this here too:
Consequences
First offence: warning.
Second offence: warning ban of up to 1 week.
Third offence: permanent ban.

For serious offences, or multiple offences within a short period of time, a permanent ban may be issued immediately. This is up to moderator discretion.

He's been serious the whole time and I agree with him. I've read back through the last few pages and all I can see is pointless spam-like messages  :-\

If you want to have casual conversations, go to IRC and set up your own 2013 ANers channel ;)

are you being serious now :(?

Yes I am.

Let's have a look at this thread:
- The first half is basically boasting about exams/SACs/trial exams (and certain members (plural) involved in that sort of stuff have moved on from that and that's great to see)
- After that there was a fair few pages of good discussion with random spamming in between (not much, and the rules are that strict so no-one cared)
- Stuff about holiday homework, good discussion (and some good memes)
- A fair few pages of random curry discussion, but they moved on to a new thread and that's a good move too
- Not much productive discussion since then

The best parts of this thread (imo) were when you guys were supporting each other. That's when the older members jumped in too and that's when the best discussion was had.

Spamming and trying to get this thread to "have the most posts on the stats page" or whatever, is a very low point for this.

So if you think I'm not serious about locking this thread, you're mistaken. I will if it continues to be spam and I will be going to the rules which you so kindly quoted in reply as well. If you want to talk about crap, go to IRC or go to fb or something.

These discussions could be because we're on holidays and don't have that much intense study to do.
I'm sure that once school starts again, then the conversation will change topic back to pretty much homework, classes, exam prep, etc

You don't *need* to post in this thread because you want it to go on. As I said, this thread is at it's peak when it is actually helping people (ie. just like the forum). Otherwise, it's just a load of spam. And that's against the rules (especially as there is a good 100 pages of it).

And on a side note, I'm not the only one who is quite annoyed by this thread. There are actually a LOT of people who see it as spam (two who have posted recently regarding the issue). I just wanted to bring it up in my own way because last time I made a point about bragging about scores (with Paul making a similar post too), things changed for the better. Hope we can see a good outcome again.

I'm not against fun and the occasional off-topic post that is for lulz, but I am against constant spam. That's not on.

She did say that we're on holidays, and that does explain why we're off chatting a little... So give it a month or two to get it going again, i.e., once school starts...

But either way, we'll chill on the conversation and use Skype or something for it...

just disable the respect for this thread and let the kids do what they want, no need to close it since it doesn't annoy anybody

If you think that I'm trying to increase my post count by posting in this thread, I apologise and by all means you can disable my post count in this thread if you wish..

Honestly, is the stuff we talk about really "crap"? Sure it's off topic, but crap is a strong word..

I don't think closing respect is warranted; there are actually a lot of posts on this thread that deserve the respect.
I like the Skype chatter idea! I've no problem with you guys mucking around with each other but more recently it detracts from the real reason the thread exists (or still exists), IMO. It's an efficient resource for you all going into next year but you really would be better off on an IRC channel.
Kesh, I think by 'crap' he just means the random chatter that's just nice to have for the sake of it! It's just not very wholesome conversation :).

Very tempted to remove this from the recent post feed.

Really I think you guys should take this to Skype though, 152 pages is ridiculous.

I probably shouldn't have said that and sorry for any offense, but when the off-topic is at least 70 of 150 pages and mods have been VERY lenient with it until now (and if you look back, I did mention a lock once before), it needs a harsher term.

Certainly not. A few of the senior members who have been around for a while (I won't name anyone) really don't like me. I was a complete pain in the arse for the majority of the year and I even got a few nasty PMs from some of them - including one telling me to go and take my problems elsewhere for the good of the community. It hurt at the time, but I do acknowledge some responsibility for that. By the same token however, any issue someone has with me is their own problem and not mine, as long as I'm not breaking the forum rules (which I haven't thus far). /rant

In case this was pitched at me: maybe it's not because anyone "really doesn't like" you, but maybe that it's because maybe someone expects more from you.

There are very few people who I actually truly dislike.

Got it :)

I feel so guilty haha, like I've caused half this trouble D:

hehe I probably have :)

No worries mate. (I probably took it the wrong way since it's 1am)

All the more reason for everyone here to get Skype!! You get instant notifications too :) Trust me, it doesn't take long to make!

Chemistry at 2:30am

Thushan will be proud of me..

A tip for anyone doing chem, do not neglect decimal places.. Sounds obvious and dead simple on the face of it. But when it comes to significant figures, it really does help sometimes. I find myself constantly trying to figure out why a question is 2 sig figs instead of 3, only because I write for example, Carbons molecular mass as 12 and not 12.0.. On the calculator, it's more or less excused, but not on paper.

Oh, and for any subject. Just don't take short cuts at first. Even with the simple stuff.. Write everything you compute in both your head and in the calculator on the piece of paper. I made silly mistakes and as I went through all my steps, I easily figured out where I went wrong. (Using (N) instead of (N2) for Nitrogen gas)

Of course, in time, and with practice, you'll become more and more proficient when you do these and it'll become second nature. When that occurs, you might start considering saving time by skipping the minor steps. But time isn't as important as solidifying your understanding right now, so don't be naughty. Write all your working out.
