Can't you get a yearly student pass?

EDIT: Wait no, you can't get a student pass but I'm pretty sure you can get a myki pass.

I got one for free when I pickedup my concession card yesterday. Just had to pay $9 for the concession card itself.

Wait, what? Year's worth of travel for free? Or is it via HECS or something

no just the card itself, you need to put money into it for it to work :)

You should always touch on, they are far more lenient with touching off though (I've never been fined for not touching off)

a) They charge you for a daily if you don't (I'm pretty sure they do), more profit for them if you only traveled for a couple of stops on a tram
b) The know that it is sometimes impossible to touch-off on a congested bus/tram without creating delays or being a general nuisance

What is the difference between a tertiary concession myki and a normal concession myki?

You always have to touch on if you have a myki (just like with metcards).

However, if you have a myki pass and you don't travel to another zone, you won't be charged extra if you don't touch off on trains or trams.

On that note, I hear you don't get charged a daily fare if you don't touch off on trams with myki money either. You still have to if you change zones though.

If you don't touch on, you can't touch off when you get to the city, so you gotta ask for the inspector to help you out.

Always happens to me.

This is off topic but it's a question I have about myki (once metcards are completely phased out). Say for some reason I needed to catch the bus and I had money on me, but no myki card. Would this scenario mean I couldn't catch the bus?

When Metcards are phased out, there won't be any temporary tickets available.  So you'd need to purchase a myki, top it up and then you can travel.

I reckon the government should really introduce rentable myki's.  So for tourists, they can rent a myki at the airport by paying a deposit.  When they leave, if they want to collect their deposit, just give the card back.  The same could be used for local people who are occasional public transport users.

The only problem would be the logistical part of implementing it.  Given how disastrously myki was handled, I don't think this would go down very well.

I take the bus (one stop) and train (one stop) everyday to uni. Should I touch on and touch off every single time? And does that mean I'd be charged daily? I'm so confused as to how myki works.
