Hey guys,

I just wanted to ask which one you guys think is "better". I realise there may be some bias because I'm posting this on the Monash University section but please show me the pros and cons for both courses.
Aspiring doctor. Why? For the same four reasons as everybody else. Chicks, money, power and chicks.

Well I have only studied the Bachelor of Biomedicine so i will give insight to that degree. I personally very muched enjoyed Biomedicine. Because of the core subjects that run straight through the degree you will get to know the people in your course well. The core subjects are basically what makes the bachelor of biomedicine different to the bachelor of science at UoM. I have a friend who does the Biomedical Science Scholars at monash and he actually regrets not going to melb uni for the bachelor of biomedicine, but it seems to be more the distance to monash that seems to have deterred him.

Well, I do reckon Biomed at Melbourne would be a better choice, looking it purely on academic wise, but there's a whole lot of factors that come into deciding which one you take, such as proximity to the university, campus life, scholarship money etc etc.

Do you need the scholarship money? As in, without the scholarship, will you struggle with the costs of books, accomodation, transport...etc.? If yes, then definately go for Monash. If you're aiming for MD at UoM, it's probably better to go for BBioMed at UoM, however, to prospective employers in the Biomedical field, a scholarship will be better.

What makes you think this...

A better way to decide between the two courses is what you want to do in 3 years time. If you want to be a doctor and apply for medicine, go to UoM. If you want to do research and apply for Hons/PhD then go to Monash

is it true that if you get 99 and do biomed, you certified a place for MD without having to sit the GAMSAT?

That's exactly what I was meaning to say. If you were to work in the biomedical field later on (i.e. research) - a scholarship would look better - it might show you have had passion for that area since you were younger...etc.

99.00 for FFP
99.90 for CSP

A few issues with FFP though, you'll be bankrupt for one, plus, you might not get an internship.

The fact that your ATAR got you some scholarship money will mean nothing when you apply to do research. It will be based on your marks, your reputation and who you know.

Wouldn't you say a scholarship gives you a better reputation as well as contacts with people?

it can, but it would depend on the scholarship- e.g. the Copland scholarship where it's contacts are one of it's biggest draw cards

Just saying, the Biomedical Science Scholars Program isn't really a scholarship, as in it doesn't offer any money. It's main perks are being able to fast-track the degree and finish in less than 3 years and being assigned a mentor, which could perhaps build those connections.
2011 ATAR: 99.80 - Maths Methods [50], Specialist Maths [50], Biology [46]
2012-2014: Bachelor of Biomedicine at UoM
2015-2018: Doctor of Dental Surgery at UoM

If it doesn't offer any money, then are there any real benefits to it?
I don't think fast-tracking is that much of a benefit, like, it's quite unlikely you'll be able to finish it in 2 years without horrible overloading, as well as summer and winter units as well. :S
