Bioengineering Major

Hey guys,

I need a bit of help here.

I'm planning on doing the Bionengineering major and at the top of my concerns is to attain a high GPA.

So, should I do Accelerated Maths 1+2 or Calculus 2 etc in first year?

Also, would having done more harder maths (i.e Accelerated Maths 1+2) help with the rest of my studies helping me to succeed in my major?

Thanks, in advance to anyone who can help.

Very  good question. I have been thinking about the same thing.
Perhaps someone of the size of a Russ can shed light on the issues.

The system, as I understand it, introduces conflicting objectives.

On the one hand, if you are good at maths (high spesh SS, UMEP etc) the University encourages you to do the accelerated Maths stream so that you can challenge yourself academically. And having had a brief look at Calculus 1, I can see what they mean. Its pretty basic.

On the other hand, you are in various forms of competition with other students. eg BSc and Biomed students vying for MD or scholarship students who need to maintain 75% for their scholarships.

What is it going to be? Challenge yourself or dumb your maths down for high GPA ?

I hope that the University operates some sort of standardisation for the presumably tougher subjects, else I cant blame people for going down the vegie maths path to protect their GPA.

Also remember that first year subjects are weighted less significantly in calculations of GPA.

If the mark difference between accelerated math and calculus is the defining factor between getting in and not getting in, then you aren't the ideal candidate anyway.
