The Unit Guide says that students will be penalised for exceeding the word limit.

How far above/below 1000 words can we go?
I always look a little lost.

The general rule is that you can go about 10% below the word limit and still get a high distinction. So for a 1000 word essay you can write 900 words (excl. bibliography/tables etc.).

Of course getting closer to the limit doesn't mean a better grade... I've found that you can still get a Ds by going below 90% as long as you don't waffle, but you should really be aiming to approach the limit without padding it out.

Remember quality over quantity (unless you're submitting only a fraction of the recommended length). I'm sure the lecturers and tutors will go over the requirements in great detail and give ample advice... even then, the essay and draft are only worth 10% overall so don't stress too much over it.

I was even slightly over 10% and still did just fine. They're lenient. Likewise my essay was like 20 minutes late and they didn't penalise me. They're not robots obviously, i'm sure they understand if you're a little under or over.
