The stationary phase is where the mobile phase passes through and the distribution of the sample between the phases occur.

Essentially, the stationary phase lets substances 'break down' into their individual components. It's useful because it lets us determine which substances adsorb more readily to the stationary phase, thus producing either a retention time or retention factor (depending on the type of chromatography analysis).

The components separate due to differing levels of adsorption (the temporary binding of a component to the stationary phase), and thus components have different retention times.

The mobile phase kind of "sweeps" the components down the stationary phase.

Not all chromatography have retention times (paper chromatography for example).
