is oxidation

fe2+ -> fe3+ + e-

reduction

MnO4- + 8H+ + 5e- -> Mn2+ + 4H2O? ??

overall

Mno4- + 8H+ + 5Fe2+ -> Mn2+ + 4H2O + 5Fe3+?????? am i rite?

That's correct - balance oxygen by adding water, then balance hydrogens by adding hydrogen ions, then combine the two half-equations into one equation, cancelling out the electrons.

true dat.

also with this question you will need to (well at least i do) write out a chemical equation between the two to find out which will be the reductant and the oxidant...from there you can just do what the others said!!!!  ;D ;D
