when should i start exam preparation?
« on: April 01, 2012, 02:18:43 pm »

Hi, Ive been working at my own pace and am up to ch 13 of the Heinemann book, and have been regularly doing practice questions from checkpoints, neap and Lisachem blue book. Any suggestions on when to start practice exams? Should i focus on solidifying my knowledge of theory before i start this? There's about 2 months until exams, but i'm scared that if i don't start soon, and leave it until 1 month before exams, it wont be enough for exam revision.

All suggestions are welcomed and is greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

Hard work pays off. If you don't think so, you're not working hard enough.

My advice is you shouldn't do practice exams until you've finished the course content. So probably early September would be a good time to start.

Early September would be too late seeing as Chemistry has a mid year ^__^

Clearly he isnt a math science student :P

If you've done as many practice questions as you've said and you're coping with them, i reckon your knowledge on theory would be fairly solid already. I think you should just go ahead with exams and if you find that you struggle with certain things than go back over the theory/concepts on it.

My thoughts exactly ;)

I'd say, whenever you feel like you know the course very well. Doing practice exams at that stage will expose any gaps in your knowledge which you can go back and review to strengthen your level of preparation.

I have 3 mid years (chem/physics/psych), been doing checkpoints, neap and stuff... but when do I fully start preparing for the exams? There are 3 so naturally, I'm freaking out.

Most people say to start when you think you pretty much have a thorough understanding of the key concepts of Unit 3. Don't start too early and save a couple of exam papers for the last week. Most people find they do better leaving a couple of exam papers in the last week so their knowledge is still fresh.

Well I guess that is quite tough, but imagine doing 6 VCE end of year exams. LOL

On that, ideally save VCAA exams for the last week, as that's the style you'll be exposed to in the exam.

Would this really be a good idea? As in would there be sufficient time to absorb the information provided on examiner reports and reap the benefits within such a short period of time before the actual exams? I was gona spread the VCAA papers out, so like do 2008 after say 5 commercial exams then 2009 after 10 others and 2010 after another few commercial ones etc. Or is this a bad idea?

Whatever you think will work for you. Remember the point of practice exams is to expose any gaps in your understanding, rather than to learn things from the examiners' reports.

That sounds like a good idea- I might try that myself :)
