Hey I was just wondering what would be some good (or not so common) topics to research on? I don't exactly want to do something like Chinese New year or Confucius but I was thinking that if I choose a really irregular topic, there might not be much information on it.
Any ideas on what's good?   :-X

Chinese New Year, School Life and Travel To Beijing are the most popular topics from what my teacher said.

I suppose the easiest topic would be school life but I reckon a good topic (provided you like popular topics) for SL'ers would be travel to Beijing (or some other place that tickles your fancy).

TT, you did SLA didn't you?  My friend did SLA last year as well and he also did the One child policy.  When I read his detailed study, I thought it was pretty hard.

Yes, I did do SLA and my detailed study was on one child policy.

I'm the type of person who loves to memorise stuff, so I basically memorised everything i researched.

One of the many reasons why you achieved such a great mark for SLA lol.

So what kind of topics would you be looking to do?

Topics that the examiners would be able to ask lots of questions?

I guess very common topics. If you choose weird ones then the questions they ask can be really unexpected because they don't know what it is about/common things related to it. Only down side to really common topics is that they'll be bored to death.

That's why you pick something that's not too far-fetched yet still manages to capture their attention, put some thought into this!

If you are strong students and want to achieve high study scores, you need to pick the topics that are less popular, but more related to China & its culture in order to stand out amongst the crowd. the premise of doing this is, however, to be prepared for ANY sort of questions that are related to the topic. THINK about as many questions as possible, and list your answers as DETAILED as possible.

However, if you are an average student and want a safety-net while doing this part of the exam, i suggest that you pick a topic that is mundane. Though you may bored your examiners, you are less likely to lose marks.

Make up your minds, and make sure you are picking the topic that is RIGHT for you :)

Yeah, I did Chinese school life and that is a VERY common topic for SL'ers.  But since my oral exam was on the first day, I think I was lucky to avoid "boring" my examiners.

Think about Chinese traditions, festivals, places, people, culture, institutes, its development, educational system, and history. You can even pick a great/famous Chinese person(this is hard)

Choosing a place, however, could be an easy/nice one. Pick a place in China (except for Tibet) that is preferably NOT well known, and of which could be fascinating at the same time(find something INTERESTING). Generally examiners are at about my parents' age & even younger, i know that they are quite happy to learn more about their own country, talk about the nice foods, products, local language and how it looks like etc. They are not likely to ask anything off-topic, there's limited things in which they could you ask about a place. To help you prepare for this topic, GOOGLE all the way :) spend about 5-10 minutes per day googling about the place you will be searching for, prepare everything in English first, then translate them into Chinese. Trust me, that will work.

I also recommend choosing a type of food that represents China. Most Chinese examiners care about consuming FOODs that are delicious yet healthy, ofcourse, and are also currently popular in China. You could do 阿胶, its extremely popular now. So when you get a mid-aged examiner, tell him/her firstly that 阿胶 makes people look younger. Emphasise to a young female examiner that it could improve their skin conditions. Also, 中国的糕 is good, and there are heaps more you could think about.

Ill suggest you more topics if you tell me more specifically about what you are interested in, :)

If I were the examiner, I would become insecure about my appearance if someone said that. And subsequently I would give the student who provoked this unpleasant feeling of insecurity a low mark xD. But then again, it depends on the person.
