Time series question

To whomever can help, I need help with time series...

When a question gives you a diagram with a time series graph on it and it asks you to give a short description of the time series in terms of its trend and patterns, do you just mention that it's a positive/negative secular trend and one of the following of cyclic, seasonal or random? If not, then what more do you need to add?

Also, how would you answer a question like "Why would it be appropriate to use 12 terms?" given that we desire to fit a trend line using a moving average.

Thanks in advance.
