Why do so many internationals come to study here when they can study in the unis in their own country?

The loneliness, the cold winters...
unis/tafes milk their money dry.
As an international student in the US, I find this question very condescending. Yes, many people come to Australia for permanent residency, but a lot of students come because we have some damn good universities and training programs. We have some very good degrees. Some countries have absolutely shoddy education systems; other countries don't offer certain programs, and in some countries, it's very very very hard to get into a good school (think of China).
Australia had a great standard of living, and a pretty good job market, especially for skilled workers. It's relatively egalitarian, and has good human rights. Do I think it's worth it for the students who come just for PR? In many cases, yes. And it's often worth it for us too - they fill gaps in the workforce.
Also, the winters in Australia ain't that cold. Northern China would probably be much, much worse. And international students often have very strong communities at universities. I know that tonight, I have a retreat thing for internationals, as well as several parties being thrown by international students mostly for other international students. Tomorrow afternoon I'm going to a training session for international orientation counsellors. I'm sure there's a similar support network at lots of Australian universities.
