Chem 1/2 Questions

Okay somehow over the past few weeks I've forgotten many of the basic concepts I'm going to need for tomorrows test :( Some of them are really easy, but I can't be bothered spending ages flicking through my notes lol

Anyways, here goes:

1. The name for CH3CH=CHCH3 is but-2-ene, where does the 2 come from again?

2. In the name of an acid, for example, butyl ethanoate, what does the "yl" mean again?

GRR THIS IS MEANT TO BE COMMON SENSE, please help me :P

1- 2 is there because the double bond is on the 2nd carbon

2-yl comes from the alcohol reagent of the esterification process; esterification (process to make esters) needs an alkanol + carboxylic acid (and a catalyst, usually concentrated H2SO4 (aq). For example to make butyl ethanoate you need butanol and ethanoic acid so basically you get the alkanol and get rid of the -anol and change it to 'yl'

It's not an acid by the way; it's an ester (sweet-smelling compound)

No you definitely study basic esters reasonably thoroughly in Year 11.

Maybe in your school. In mine, they didnt. I also went to three tutoring services during the course of last year, and each one never mentioned esters. :P

Pretty sure the normal yr11 doesn't :P I didn't, except in transition week (ie. the last week of yr11 where we did random yr12 stuff - including esters for the chem part)

Yeah, they're just weird :P

Woah that's weird haha. We were expected to know about all of that stuff prior to Year 12, and I'm pretty sure we conducted esterification reactions last year. But then again I had like a 50% average in Chemistry last year so we could have done anything and I wouldn't have remembered.
