My super asian family isnt letting me do further cause they think that i need it to do medicine or engineering... :S!!!! they want me to get a ss above 50 so that im 'guaranteed a 99.95' but i only want to do commerce/law, and definitely dont need a 99.95 for that... how can i convince them that further is better for me? ALso, im doing year 11 general (further stream) cause our school doesnt offer year 11 specialist maths. I really love general, but i dont think my parents will let me, cause they dont believe that i could get a 99.95 with 'only' a 50 in further.... ive already convinced them that i wanted to do legal over biology, which literally took like 3 years... and now their saying if i choose further, i have to do bio! WHAT DO I DO?? i want to cry

Your parents seem to be very strict, unrealistic and ignorant about VCE. You probably won't convince them but they need to know that getting a 99.95 isn't everything. If you just want to do further that is perfectly fine. They need to know that you don't want to do medicine or engineering but I think they wouldn't get the message.  Just because you do specialist it doesn't mean you will get over 50. Man your life must be pretty crap if your parents are making all your choices for you. A- is an Asian F so your parents standard of an A+ must be "what the heo, 99% on calculus test? YOU DIE NOW. Hopefully you can convince by saying that you just need to get into the course. Pretty sure most asian parents would be happy with their child getting over 90. Best of luck getting this through to them because if you get a 99.9 ATAR I think you'll have to flee the country.LOL. In all seriousness, you need to get this through, a couple of lies like Specialists is not going to scale over 50 and you should be alright.

Yer I just don't see how parents can pressure their kids into doing a specific course - I mean in the end its your life and therefore has to be your own decision, this is not saying that you should just ignore your parents but they should give you a choice, they can give you advice and guidance on choosing a career but they can't ultimately choose it for you.

Well firstly "only want to do Commerce/Law" - It still requires a 98 at Monash which is probably the best Uni. to do it at in Victoria, something to consider... pretty tough to get into.

That said your parents clearly don't understand the VCE system. Try organize a meeting with your VCE coordinator to help explain to them why doing Further could be a better choice. Secondly, doing a subject that scales above 50 = guaranteed above 99.95? How about the fact you still need to get a 50 in all your other subjects LOL. Getting a 99.95 is super nice and all, but once you're in your course, you're in your course - the only thing a high ATAR would help you with is a nice scholarship, and I'm pretty sure anything over 99 would get you that. If convincing them with logic and facts doesn't work, then imo just tell them you're going to do further and that's that. They might get pissed, but it's your choice - after year 10 you're in high school of your own free will so they can't force you to do something you don't want to do, even if they threaten to deprive you of food and shelter for the rest of your life . Also, you need to think of the precedent that's being set by caving in to such ridiculousness. You don't want to be one of those people who's graduated high school, and is still not allowed to go out past 10pm on a Saturday night... I know people like that, and it's not a fun lifestyle.

yeah theyre very instense. actually they werent very much concerned about me doing further until i got my viet score, a raw 42, and cause my brother was the dumb one who got 44, they think that the only way i can still do well is by ripping a raw 50 in spech, which is next to impossible. i just want to kill myself... my parents are irritating, but the real issue is my brother. he wants me to beat his 'mediocre' 99.75 and cause he did spech, the ONLY way for me to do well is by doing spech in his eyes. I cant lie to my parents abot the scaling, cause my brother has already told them, cause he got 45 in spech, it went to ~52, so they noe that its possible to exceed 50... thats why they want me to do it... i hate my life.... my school teachers arent much help either, cause theyre all saying that i could easily pull a 50 in further, but about 32-34 in spech due to my 'aptitude' making everything all the more confusing. i jsut want to become a lawyer, and follow my dream... HOW DO I CONVINCE THEM PLEASE!

and teewreck, i could rebel, but at the end of the day, i need to come back home and i cant sway from what they say. even if i choose further against their wishes, they would taunt me saying 'youve flushed away your potential' and i would stuff up further as a result. and once ive gotten my atar, they'll say its cause i didnt do spech, not realising that it was their taunting that killed me, not my subject selection.  ... i dont noe wot to do. ive threatened to move out, and my dad broke my laptop (i had to buy another one myself after working for a while). anyway, i think i should just go to the spech board and try for a 50. maybe one day, theyll just act like normal parents and support me...

I understand where you're coming from, not personally, but because I know a fair few people going through the same thing as you. Firstly, although it may seem shit now, I promise you it gets beter ... even if you do end up doing Spesh, it's not the end of the world!

Now your brother is by no means "dumb" if he got a 99.75, it sounds like you're being put through a lot of undue stress (I know I would be stressing!). I think you need to tell your parents, flat out, you want to do Commerce/Law... which is a very versatile and respectable degree, and that you wouldn't enjoy medicine or engineering. I mean ffs, you want to be a lawyer, not a janitor, I can't understand how they'd be pissed off about that haha. If they say "we know you would love to be a Lawyer, but we know better and screw that, you need to do Medicine/Engineering" then they're not worth attempting to convince any further.

If it's more of an issue that they're worried about job prospects/salary/social standing, do some research and explain to them that you'll be looking at a good salary, high social standing, good jobs etc... how you go about convincing them depends on WHY they don't want you to do commerce/law in the first place.

EDIT: By the way I'm sure you can do well in Spec... but it's a matter of principle . A 99.90 isn't exactly something to be ashamed of anyway .

Do what you want to do (provided you enjoy it!) and if your parents disagree, arrange a meeting with the teachers/principal/careers person/VCE coordinator/whoever to get this sorted out, because your parents - no offence - are way over-the-top and are being very strict and unfair with you. The added expectations (which you clearly don't want or need) are magnifying the problem. If they don't back down, screw it, just pick what you want, it's your life and they shouldn't be running it for you against your will (no matter what their intentions are).

Tell the coordinator/whoever to say that the call is simply routine and you didn't ask for it, hence you'll be "safe" in that regard (hopefully!).

What the actual f***, this is so fricken unfair! I'm actually angry for you! How can any parent expect this and expect the child to handle it well? This is just stupid, as aforementioned, get in touch with the school ASAP, this needs intervention. Not only is it against your wishes, but this could have adverse consequences on your mental health, and that is far more important than any amount of 50s (no joke).
