Politics

miss shep:
how would i approach this question ? as in breaking it down ?!!!

shazzthepimpingturtle:
Heyy Miss Shep!

Ohkayyy hummmmmmmmm.

So basically you need to break the topic down into what you want to talk about yeah?

Evaluate the power and influence of the United Nations and two other institutions of global governance in the twenty first century.

So the way that I would approach this would be, I had to do a similar essay.
> Firstly, ‘power and influence on the global political arena’ must be defined. The global political arena, theoretically, stands on the basis of internationalism and the notion of an international community. So to analyze the extent, as to such, of the influence of these Institutions of Global Governance, the contribution to the ‘development of humanity’ has to be understood for each. Each of these IGG’s constitute for different values held by the international community and their global impact can assessed.

That's what I would target in my essay (the underlined bit)
For the United Nations, I would break it down into:
1. How the UN has been the cornerstone for the development of not only the international community, but the entire idea of internationalism.
2. It's primary aims and objectives, the teachers want to see how much you know.
3. Launch into some case studies
4. Evaluate it's power by providing it in perspective of it's contribution to the development of humanity.

Then I guess pick your own favourite IGGs and attack them in a similar way.
That's how I would do it, I think.

Remember that in politics, your discussion should never be limited to any one state, institution, organisation or otherwise individually, you have to look at the bigger picture. Hence, make sure that when you choose two other instiutions of global governance (you are essentially limited to the IMF, ICC and WTO), you consider what evidence you are going to utilise that will make your discussion holistic in its analysis of the global political arena.

I'd advise that you choose the IMF and WTO - the two major players in the moderation of global economics. Hence your case studies should be of both positive and negative examples of states interacting with the IMF and WTO.

For example:

IMF - they've bailed several countries from near bankruptcy, but are often criticised for their stifling austerity measures. Additionally, power is concentrated in the hands of rich states such as the USA, due to percentage of voting rights being proportional to financial contribution.

So you need to find evidence of all this, as well as the WTO (to do with how they've liberalised world trade) and connect it back to the United Nations. Ideally your discussion should be in relation to the aims and objectives of the three organisations. Remember to be ambivalent in your discussion, otherwise you'll lose marks no matter how fantastic your analysis is.

Your general thesis for this topic should be the correlation between economic prosperity and political and diplomatic interaction between states.
