Studio Art GAT Scaling.
Yendall:
Hello atarnotes!
My teacher has briefly explained what is going on this year with Folio Scaling, but I'm unsure how it works. Basically all I've gathered from this is that I need to obtain a certain score in the GAT to keep my folio at it's raw score.
Sorry, I seem rather ignorant on the matter, but if anyone could fill me in on how the GAT affects my folio this year, it would be much appreciated. I do understand how the GAT affects other subjects and my overall score, but not so much Studio Arts.
Thanks!

I really don't think the GAT's going to have a huge impact, if any, on your folio study score; the stuff in the GAT that they pass off as 'art theory' really isn't relevant to what you have to do to complete your folios, and it'd be pretty unfair if there were to be some influence from the GAT on your study score for studio. Folio's should stay at their raw score regardless of how your teacher marks them, the only time when they could change is if your school has external examiners come in to assess the way your teacher's marked the folios, and the marks could be changed accordingly.
From what I remember from VCE last year, the GAT really only comes into the equation if you're looking at special consideration or derived study scores for your subjects, so you really don't need to worry about the GAT having an impact on your studio study score at all :)

Oh okay, that's relieving!
Although my teacher said there is a new system this year that involves the GAT in a different way then it has in previous years. Something along the lines of "if you don't score highly in the visual arts section of the gat, your folio and SS will be scaled appropriately, relative to that mark" (for normal scaling, not special consideration). Which is incredibly concerning, because I am fairly certain I can get much, much higher marks in the subject then I would've in the GAT.

I really don't think that would be the case, seriously, if it is, that's effed up! To be perfectly honest, most people don't even give much consideration to the GAT (I definitely was in that category, along with a majority of my school's yr12 cohort), so to have it affect scaling of folios/exams is ridiculously unfair. I'm thinking there might have been some miscommunication between your teacher and whoever he/she has gotten that information from, because it just doesn't seem right. Although whenever I see my studio teacher from last year again, I'll be sure to bring that up and see if she says the same thing.

Well, this is exactly the same reaction my teacher had. She said it was completely unfair that they are doing it like that. It may be my school though, because we "can't afford" to have VCAA examiners check out our folios for marking (or something along those lines) so they are marked internally and then our GAT score is placed next to that internal mark and it is scaled appropriately (which is absolute bullshit, seeming as though my first folio was 28/30, and i doubt i'll get a 50/50 for the visual arts/english section of the GAT).
It just frustrates me that we could be scaled for something that no-one else in the state gets affected by.
Don't quote me on these rules, all I know is that this is happening and it affects us majorly if we screwed up the GAT.
And that would be great if you could get another studio teachers opinion on this! It's got me very confused and anxious.
