In terms of GLC, which is more important, the attraction to the stationary phase or volatility?

the less volatile the substance the more likely it will bond to the stationary phase if it is polar . . .

volatility decreases with increasing chain length
volatility decreases with stronger bonding e.g hydrogen bonding in alcohols
