Hey guys,
I was unsure of the differences between dimethyl and ethyl, when using them to name carbon chains ?

Thanks

Dimethyl:

CH3CH2CH2C(CH3)2CH2CH2CH3

Ethyl:

CH3CH2CH2CH(CH2CH3)CH2CH2CH3

I hope that's right :O (my chem is terribly rusty atm)

Basically for dimethyl, if you find the longest carbon chain and there are two carbons attached to the longer chain then it would count as dimethyl.

For ethyl, find the longest carbon chain and if there are two carbons attached to the longer chain but those carbons are attached to one another then  it would count as an ethyl.

Someone check if this is right :/

Dimethyl - two individual substituent branches off the longest carbon chain, each comprising a CH3 group.

Ethyl - a single substituent branch off the longest carbon chain, comprising of a C2H5 group.
