I wish I was feeling as good about this exam as I was about biology :| hoping there's lots of organic and bio stuff that would be nice

What kind of marks do you need for a study score of 32-34? I've kinda given up on chem and I'm pretty sure it will be in my bottom 2 lol

B's should get you around a 32-34.

There will be a reasonable amount of biochem/organic chem - it's technically 50% of the course - but unlike physics, chem isn't a divided exam - so you tend to get both instrumental analysis and the bio/organic stuffed mashed up all into one question

Guys, just making sure -

When you react salicylic acid and ethanoic anhydride, isn't ethanoic acid produced as a by-product? NEAP 2012 says that water is produced instead...

If you're doing the question I think you're doing, I think it's because it has salicylic acid reacting with ethanoic anhydride in the ratio 2:1, so the resulting ethanoic acid from the first reaction is reacted with another salicylic acid, yielding water.

FML NEAP 2010 destroyed me.... T-T F*** I used 10 ml instead of 17.91 ml. Aww, I would have gotten my first mark above 90% if I hadn't used that damn number and lost 9 marks... And I was 30 seconds from running out of time as well :(

yes that should be right... unless its saying at the end of the reaction if they assume the excess ethanoic acid also reacts with the salicylic acid

Actually there's something called consequential marking. If you use one incorrect value but do everything else in that question sequence correctly, you'll only lose a single mark (or two), for the question where you created the incorrect value. Essentially, that value becomes correct for the rest of the question.

But this depends on how thorough and cogent your working out is.

Believe me, I'm going to try! But there's still a lot of work to be done, for all of us!

I got tripped up by that exact same question! I'm pretty sure its exactly what Nobby said about the ratios and stuff. I'm so used to ethanoic anhydride being in excess that I didn't even bother thinking and jumped straight to the answer :P
