Haha that's what I usually do after I took my bag the first time. Yup, phone on the ground face down.

If you have a bag, you can put them in that and into the container. If not, I think people can usually put their things (such as books and pencil cases, not valuables which go under your table) on the floor against the wall, near the entrance. Though I've never really taken notice of this, so don't take my word for it. If you have a friend there with a bag, it'd probably be safer to put it in theirs.

how is the collection of bags regulated? is it just go in and grab your stuff? is it ever likely that someone might take a bag that's not theirs on purpose?

Yes, go and grab, store it in some storing place. Theoretically yes, someone could easily steal your stuff or accidentally take something etc. etc. so you bring your valuables along with you to the room and leave it where the examiners can see it.

I don't think you should do it at all. Just cross it out and write it somewhere else. There's always a fuss about it from teachers

Yes and make sure it's switched off!  Don't put it on silent - 3 hours of having it switched off will not cause a premature apocalypse.  Trust me, it's worth having your phone switched off.   :)  Getting into trouble at a uni exam is serious academic misconduct and they do treat it seriously.  Very seriously I've heard.

I probably sound like a loser, but do they have signs showing you where the exam room is, or i guess you just follow the crowd? How long does it usually take to find your seat, i.e. how early should I get there if reading time is 9:15?

It literally takes 5 minutes to walk there if you dont walk at a granny speed, if you do it should still only take 10 minutes tops - this is from parliment.
Get there 15 minutes before the time scheduled for the exam cos that's when the reading time starts.
I got there pretty early today and it was just standing in the cold and talking to people... Not fun haha If your exam starts at like 9:30 i'd try getting there at like 9am :)
