what is the exact definition of a Z group in an amino acid?

and do we need to know which substances are soluble / insoluble and all the exceptions e.g Ba(OH)2 insoluble ? ?? or will the question state they are soluble / insoluble

The z group is just the group that hangs off the C atom that's attached to the amine and carboxyl group in alpha amino acids. Don't know the formal definition though,so someone else may help you out here.

And you should know the solubility table, they may or may not tell you which is soluble or not.

so is the Z group the whole chain that varies between each amino acid?

H2N-CH-COOH

everything ontop of the CH = Z group correct?

Yep that's right, the Z group varies between each amino acid.
It's called the alpha carbon btw, if anyone's interested.
