What sort of information are you after, then?

not sure what you mean, but go to handbook.unimelb.edu.au

you can find the prescribed texts and recommended texts for any subject

a lot of the handbook entries have: You will be advised of prescribed texts by your lecturer.

at monash it has handbook entries (brief summary of course) and unit guides (more indepth with which chapers to looks at)

but i guess melbourne has a different system

I'm afraid Monash is the anomaly there, not Melbourne! I have just spent a large portion of my life being screwed around by Penn's lack of syllabus information on their websites. The information we get in the Melbourne handbook is a godsend compared to the lack thereof for some universities. Do you know how hard it is to get a subject approved when all you know about it is the title, and that it is worth 12.5 credit points? Eugh.
