hey guys I was looking over the log last night and i dont think i explained why pH decreases as temperature increases clearly so hopefully this makes more sense

If we have a neutral solution of pure water at 25C the concentration of H+ is 10^-7, and we know the reaction is endothermic as delta H is positive, so if we increase the temperature we will be favouring the forward reaction, 2H2O <----> H3O+ and OH-

in comparison with the original solution, the NEW solution has more H3O+ and OH- (OH- concentration is irrelevant when calculating pH due to formula), therefore the pH overall is decreased because by definition pH = -log(H3O+) whilst the concentration still remains neutral

i.e. if the original concentration of H+ was 10^-7 the new concentration of H+ must be greater than 10^-7 if there is a net forward reaction, so lets say 10^-6,

new pH = -log(10^-6)
new pH = 6,
solution remains neutral

Here the logs, I edited some of the chat towards the end to keep it to just chemistry-relevant discussion and applied basic formatting. I began going through and typesetting some of the equations, realised that would take too long haha (probably no decent automated solutions for that anyway).

This weeks was presented by Tonychet2, the final pdf amounted to a whopping 41 pages 0.o

Since I haven't been doing logs each week, we might as well try and remain consistent with the formatting. The process I've been using is:
1. Copy and Paste from skype to Word. (the output from this might differ depending on skype client versions)
2. Cut out casual discussion at start and at end of tutorial (focus on just the chemistry stuff)
3. Select all, set font to Trebuchet MS, size 10.5
4. Open up the find dialog, turn on 'apply wildcards', and search for:
Code: [Select]
\[?:??:?? PM\]

This is to apply formatting to timestamps all at once. If the dates seep into the timestamps, I search for those, and just go replace all to remove them at once. The forward slash is the escape character (the square bracket symbol by itself means something special and we just want to use a regular square bracket) and the ? is a wild card for a single character. You can pick up a problem here, if the times seeps into double digits, e.g. [10:00:00 PM], then you're going to need to stick another question mark in at the start.

Anyway, you search for that (in the drop down box, select find in 'main document'), and click on highlighting to double check that any other data hasn't been highlighted. You can now apply the font.

The font I chose is: Courier New and size: 9.

5. Apply formatting to quotes. The skype quotes are automatically formatted as <<< so you can just search for that and apply the indentation and font (same one as the time stamps, Courier New, 9)

6. Apply formatting to links, search for 'http' and just click enter to 'linkify' them.

7. Copy/paste in images if they were referenced.

8. You could also choose to edit out that skype dialog, the *** has been added *** stuff, but I couldn't really be bothered doing that this time.

9. Add in the header. I guess we could make the header look a bit fancier (perhaps similar to what Paul used on his Unit 3 Physics solutions with the AN banner).

10. Output as PDF

It might sound like a lot, but it only takes about 10 minutes max. I think it's worth it, it makes reading the document a bit easier.

edit: fixed up some stuff, reuploaded logs
