Accounting vs. Finance major

Hey guys!  ;D

I'm doing a Commerce/Law degree and I can't do a double major :( Ideally I'd do both acc/finance haha.

I'm interested in both accounting and finance however I don't know which of these to major in. I find (and most people generally do) find finance more interesting and engaging than accounting, but I hear that an accounting major will bring better job prospects.

I've heard that you can go into finance with an accounting degree, but not the other way around, and that accounting is really important once u get to higher job positions.. but I'm really unsure.

I did accounting 3/4 in vce, did reasonably ok (43/50) but I didn't love it or anything. I found it repetitive, and I prefer the theory side of accounting much more - practicals give me a headache!

I did a tiny bit of finance in AFC1000 in first sem and it was really interesting. However my #1 concern is job prospects - I sound very shallow here but I'd like to get a well-paying job asap haha!

What do you guys think? Finance or Accounting? :)

Up to you really, both have reasonably good job prospects, just pick the one which interests you more.

Personal opinion: I'd do finance, accounting is dead boring, finance racks in much more $$$ at the high end (and has better job prospects at the high end), finance is much more flexible than accounting and is so much more interesting.

Thankyou TT!! I'll definitely keep that in mind :D
Btw, how can u major in so many areas when you're doing a double degree? Just wondering haha.
Thanks again :)

overload, and selection of units which complements/overlap each other (ie, alot of my maths units overlap with actuarial and stats units)

Also alot of my finance units overlap with actuarial

And even more, my stats units overlap with actuarial.

So if you plan your course carefully+select the correct double degree, you can get in quite a few majors ;)

Shame that Comm/Law kids aren't allowed to have more than one major :(

I'd definitely go for finance. It's actually very interesting and more of a challenge.
Loving it so far :)

Yeah, definitely, there is an excess supply for fresh undergraduates, which is why it is extremely competitive for positions if you only have a bachelors degree. However at the high end, there is huge demand for masters/PhD finance students, you will be in an extremely competitive position to get the high positions if you have those credentials ;)

You know when you say, excess supply of fresh undergrads yeah, you can always distinguish yourself. Whether u've got the work exp., good grades, extra curricular stuff. So don't fear, and become the best you can be. I myself wanted to be like TT, but I probably need more study to achieve his grades. Hoping I'll improve.

Oh, and I support the finance > accounting notion if you've got to pick one over the other.

finance is very interesting (which is y i am majoring in it as well), but make sure u get like 70+ average as the market is competitive atm. Another thing to add is an accounting major considered in the market can apply for both accounting/finance roles easier. Whereas finance cannot do the roles of accounting unless they do a prep course. Its just something for you to consider. But I agree finance is definately way better than accounting.

Btw, remember to do corporate law and taxation law if you want to major in accounting. You don't have to do them go get ur accounting major, but u need the 2 units to get accreditation to become a CPA or a CA. However, I remember it's a different process if you're doing comm. / law, some law subjects substitute for the corp. law and taxation law.
