Is Vce Accounting necessary to do well in commerce, majoring in finance and accounting?

Not necessary. But it'd really help to do well on the compulsory first year accounting unit at uni.
That'd be Principles of Accounting at Monash, or ARA at Melbourne.
Cause I can tell you man, 30% fail rate for the one at Monash.

Yep it definitely helps to have done it especially for ARA. Fail rate for ARA is like 30% or something as well from what I heard, could be more not sure. If you want to do well then you need to put the effort in to learn everything properly and you'll be doing most of that yourself!

No for the finance side, you might find it hard if you haven't done accounting for the accounting side though from anecdotal evidence from others.

I didn't find my 1st yr introductiry accounting subject that difficult even though I did not do any accounting in high school. I think where most students fall down is when they do not actually put in the practice of constructing balance shets, pl statements and cash flow sheets before the exam - it's amazingly difficult to make put the right entities in the right places without practice. Having said that, my lowest mark for 1st year came from my 2 accounting subjects :(.
