Water confuses me!!!  I mean, I get that you have to include water along with the other reactants when searching for the strongest oxidants/reductants but what I DON'T get is:

Where are the OH-, H2, and O2 coming from in the water reactions? My teacher told me that you check if it is basic/acidic and then determine which water reaction to use.  But I'm confused about the O2 and H2, do you just assume that they are always present in the environment?  Thanks
