Tutors that care more for money

Just came back from Spesh tutoring today, and man I was almost shaking with anger. My tutor for Methods and Spesh is a highly intellectual individual, but sadly has fallen into the temptation of being money hungry. It annoys the hell out of me that I am in Year 12 and he doesn't give an absolute rats' ass about how I perform in the end of year exams. He's like, "i'm expecting 45+ from you" ...and then he's really slow, so we haven't even finished the course yet!!!!
He gives me ample homework but doesn't correct it (he doesn't give me the answers to the question so I can save time by checking it myself). Then, when I ask questions he looks at the answer at the back of he book, and manipulates his working to achieve it. Man, this is driving me crazy.
He's more interested in the more students he has, rather than the ones he already has. At the beginning he encouraged me to work in a group, then, when I gathered a few friends, he separated us all so he could cash in.
When cancelling tuition on a certain day he doesn't care about informing us, he just isn't home (this has happened too often).
If my Dad asks how I'm doing, he says I'm doing fine, and then later tells me that if I wasn't doing fine I would spoil his reputation and that was his prime concern. Nothing else.
I am a tutor myself, and I am absolutely appalled by this. Despite having young children to tutor, I ACTUALLY CARE about them.
I have told my parents that I no longer want to be tutored by him, but they are adamant that without tuition you cannot get a good mark (they should meet Thushan).
So theres my rant.
At the end of the year, instead of giving him a present for helping me throughout the year, I'm going to buy myself a present for leaving him!

If you're being forced into tuition, are you able to switch to a different tutor? Why does it "have" to be this guy?

First of all, yeah, I don't like it when tutors do it for the money, it annoys me too, especially when I tutor a lot of friends for no cost whatsoever, just because I like to teach. But yeah, there's not much you can do - I guess if he's really that bad then you should tell your parents that their money is better spent elsewhere...etc. Reason your argument, tell them what's actually so bad about him - because after all, you're the student and you know what you want.

It's hard for me to say much else, because my parents (and as a result myself as well) are generally against private tutoring. But regardless, I think it's important that you really let your parents (as well as him), know that what he's doing is just not acceptable.

Sounds like one of those douchebag tutors to be honest (they do exist).

I have been saying this all year. But they think its too risky to try someone else out, and they think he's really good only because he portrays himself well in front of parents. As I said, he cares a lot for his image and reputation...in a curry world, I guess thats all you have.

If your parents really care about reputation and image, they should let you go to this guy:

Probably one of the most famous curry mathematics tutors in Victoria.

Word of mouth is very important in a curry society...so they've been going on that.
WOW! I wish I went to him.

Yeah, I know how important word of mouth is, like it's not even just within the curry community, the thing with tutors is that their whole business is based around gaining a good reputation.

Unlike with other professions, tutors don't give out resumes, they depend on selling themselves and their past students passing on the word of mouth. Plus, parents who desperately want their kids to do well will have an inclination to trust those who can sell themselves well and build a good appearance. That's why reputation and image is important with tutoring in general, I guess.

Anyway, yeah, I had a friend who went to Rukmin and managed to score a 50 in Methods, so he's a very accomplished tutor. Apparently his daughter (who I know) is like a maths genius as well, so it runs in the family I guess :P

My uncle recommended this tutoring company and I quite like them

http://www.teacherni.com/

It's pretty much online tutoring. They are qualified teachers from India who teach your syllabus. And the great thing is that you can choose whatever time you want to have a class- you can even reschedule at the last minute if you really need to. It's $17 an hour- or maybe $20? I can't remember. Buuuut yeah, they're pretty good.

The only downside is that since they're not from here they can't give exam tips and all that jazz.

Give them a try if you can.

Hmmm, the only problem with that is $20-ish/hour is quite high for internet tutoring, especially considering they aren't teaching specifically VCE. Like I'd be willing to tutor for that much over Skype and I'm a VCE graduate, did well in subjects I'm intending to tutor and will be able to give exam tips, resources, and all that other jazz.

Well, why don't you then simply get a better tutor? There are so many tutors out there, just choose a new one, you didn't made any commitment. If you're going for the 45+ I'd recommend abes, he held the methods lecture for connect, which i went to and helped me with methods since then over facebook. Even just the written messages go through my eyes into my brain, haven't dropped a mark in my sacs since he helps me(I dropped 'a lot' of marks before. I'd be lucky to have him as an actual tutor.

Change your Spesh tutor immediately!!! Only 2 months left, you won't have any chances to change your ATAR after 2 months anyway!!!

This reminds me of my friend's chem tutor. He's very old and she has difficulty understanding him, yet at the end of every lesson he says, "Don't forget the $80 you owe me"  :o :o :o
