Doing Commerce without doing any maths ???!!!???

Hey guys, lately I've had a strong obsession with the Commerce program at Melbourne Uni and I'm definitely going to put it in my preferences, but there is a problem. I haven't done any maths subjects for a number of years.

Is there anyway I could surpass this problem ?

Not directly. You will need to start another course that does not require a maths (e.g. Arts) and enrol in the Methods equivalent subject before applying to transfer into commerce either mid-year or end of year.

Considering Methods is a pre-requisite for Commerce, you won't get in if you haven't done Maths.

On top of that I don't think you can get into Commerce anywyere without maths.

You could possibly do a degree in Arts, do foundation maths and transfer, but given that Commerce is a degree which is reliant on Maths, I have to say, if you haven't done any maths in a while, I'd have a think about wanting to do commerce, unless you wanted to do a Management or like Marketing major.

If you are really obsessed with commerce, you could try Commerce at Deakin University or Swinburne University.

Yes, a core component of a b.comm at most unis is quantitative methods - which while not diffcult compared to say a science/engineering course - will require a proficient backing in maths.

If you haven't done any maths in year 11 or 12, you probably can't even get in B.Comm through a transfer. To do foundation maths at UniMelb you need to have done Methods 1&2 if I'm not mistaken. Sorry buddy.

Well it's still technically possible, but they would need to do a commerce or similar degree which doesn't have any maths pre-requisites.

Then do a methods equivalent course at that institution (provided they can do it in their course), pass that subject and given their marks, it's still possible to transfer to Commerce and UoM.

It's not as simple as that though, I'm not trying to be negative here, but for someone who hasn't done ANY maths at all for two years (not even further) - it can probably be assumed that they weren't very good with maths up to a year 10 level either.

This means that it will be quite difficult to jump into a methods-level course, that's something to be mindful of as well!

Yes, I will have to agree with you.  The difficulty and intensity of jumping straight into a 3+4 Methods course equivalent with just year 10 maths as a foundation will have to be considered.  It's definitely not as easy.

But I think it still stands that it is not impossible - but rather a very big mountain to climb.

Even if you do get into commerce. It uses a lot of maths so you would have a hard time understanding anything :S.

Not necessarily, marketing and management have a lot of essays as their primary assessment at UoM.  But finance, economics and obviously actuarial studies, are very heavy quantitative majors.
