Parts d and e do not require part f to be completed. Part f is an extension in which another constraint is added and a new solution is found. VCAA will very rarely ever make you work out following problem to a preceding question and never in a context like this. To give you an example of when it might occur, I once did a paper which asked to find something and it was a two-part problem where you had to find another piece of information first. Then, the next question involved working out the first part of your previous question. This is why reading time is very important, because you might be able to save yourself some time during the assessment.

If you still don't understand, please ask. :)

so when answering part (d) and (e), i only have to take into account the 5 initial equalities and not x+y=500?

To give you an example of when it might occur, I once did a paper which asked to find something and it was a two-part problem where you had to find another piece of information first. Then, the next question involved working out the first part of your previous question.

can you please specify this in further detail? (pun not intended) :P

Yes, you are correct. Part f is an extension and is to be considered later.

Alright, so it was a question in the Geometry and Trigonometry module (I'm not sure if you're doing this one). It was one of those bearing questions involving a triangle and it asked to find one of the angles. The only way of finding it was to apply the cosine rule to find one of the sides first, and then apply the sine rule to find the angle. A few questions later, it asked you to find the missing side, which you happened to work out earlier.
