So my year level has just recently chosen their 3/4 subjects and I've picked Methods for 3/4 but I'm having some second thoughts. The score to go into methods at 3/4 is 70%, but my teacher gave me special consideration (I guess because he thinks I can do better or something).
Here's why I'm considering further:
- Firstly, my average is about a 68% based on my unit 1 results. I find it concerning because I'm afraid I'll continue to achieve the same average in year 12 and to get a poor study score.
- Methods is also time consuming and I am afraid it will take over the time studied for my other subjects.
- Secondly, I am not planning (or have to intentions to) study engineering or medicine, or attend Melbourne uni. I have courses in mind that only require a 3/4 mathematics but not specifically method.
- I am an Art student, I enjoy art and humanities, perhaps that's why my mathematical skills are lacking? (I do well in Bio however)
Here's why I want to stay in methods
- Method does open up options, just in case I do somewhat have a change of plan in year 12.
- I don't find methods hard, I just struggle with my sacs/exams where I make silly mistakes and fail to correctly analyze a question and getting anxious at hard questions, end up doing the wrong method and lose marks.
- I find the atmosphere of the people who I do Methods with generally better, though I don't know what it is like in the further classes, I generally do not see a lot of effort being put in by the people who I know does Further.
- The teachers who teach Methods at my school are often better than the ones who teaches Further.
- I was told by my tutor that Methods often look better on uni applications, resumes and such in general.
- I find Methods an interesting subject and I have never really "enjoyed" maths till now.

So guys, what do you think? Should I continue methods, when I don't technically need it, yet open up options and is interesting as a subject in general, or should I switch to Further to get better scores?
And also if I stay, how can I improve my scores? because I study but I'm not getting results that I want.

If none of the uni courses you have in mind require Methods as a prerequisite, and that you think it would take a lot of your time (and it generally does), then I'd opt for choosing Further instead.

However, if you think you can improve (perhaps over the summer hols?), and most importantly, ENJOY the subject, then by all means continue with it.

If it's mainly silly errors or not reading a question properly (more so than struggling with the concepts) that's costing you marks, then I think you'd find the same thing in Further.

Best way to improve imo is to pay close attention in class (not saying you aren't), and going through textbook questions thoroughly; that is, if you find a question you simply can't do, ask your teacher to help work you through it.

Good luck

I would say 68% average is quite good. There are several kids in my class getting below 60% average doing methods 3/4 next year.

Its quite different. At x school the sacs could be really hard and everyone in the class struggles to get 70+, but at y school there are numerous 100%. You can really compare one school to another and say its the same.

In my opinion, doing Methods would be worthwhile as you never know if you'll change your mind or not.

Agree. Even if you do further, you'll probably would have ended up getting higher if you did methods due to scaling. However, methods is a higher workload and obviously more challenging, but definitely doable if you enjoy maths.

yeah defiantly as dankfrank420 stated. I think even though further is easier that i am capable of 43 = 50ish after scaling, as compared to a 50 in further.
