yea this is general (might be stupid :-[) questions for the exams that i want to clear up

1. Do we have to put states for full structural formula reactions?
2. Do we need to know the process of IR and NMR or just their principles/results information.
3. Do we need know the preproduction of aspirin for example phenol + thingy (i dont know the equation)
4. Do we need to know anything specific about disease markers? (like particular diseases) or we just have to be able to apply the information given in the question.
5. Do we need know about MSDS any specific safety precautions for unit 3?

thats all for now =P more stupid questions to come

1. Structural formula reactions do not need states

2. You should know the "overall" process, there is not need to get super technical as it won't be tested directly, but it is a good idea to have a sound knowledge of it. The principles and results are more important, you should have done many practise types of questions regarding IR and NMR by now.

3. If you are using the Heinemann book, every reaction in the aspirin chapter you need to know.

4. No, you do not need to know anything specific about proteins as markers for disease. You should, however, know the principles and how it works.

5. No. (Well obviously if they ask you anything about conducting a volumetric analysis experiment or whatever, the safety precautions should be quite obvious :P)

sigh. . . . im not using the heinemann book, ive got nelson which i suggest that future students should not buy considering that i hardly used it ==

so do i need to know the one regarding phenol? i forgot what it was but its not making aspirin but like its making salcyclic acid maybe ==?

You should know these reactions:

1. Ethanoic acid + Ethanoic acid Ethanoic anhydride + water

2. Salicylic acid + Ethanoic anhydride Acetylsalicylic acid (Aspirin) + Ethanoic acid (Acetic acid)

3. Hydrolysis of Aspirin: Acetylsalicylic acid (Aspirin) + Water Salicylic acid + Ethanoic acid

You should also know that to make aspirin more soluble, you exchange the H on the carboxy group of Aspirin for a Na.

O ok cool, you know with the hydrolysis of asprin is it related to how the small intestines convert asprin into salicyclic acid and ethanoic acid yea? or is that just something different?

Yeap it is, it needs alkane conditions () occurs in the small intestines.

In regard to 'proteins as markers for disease' its probably a good idea to know one example for it. They would never ask anything specific, but it is possible that they will ask something like "Explain how proteins can be used as markers for disease  with the use of a specific example."
