Transfer to UoM after a year at Monash?

I've applied for Monash Uni BSc for 2013 but I'm hoping to transfer to UoM at the end of next year (applied to Monash cause I don't cover the prerequisites for UoM; no bio or chem). I'm not too stressed about the ATAR score, but will I not be considered because I didn't do bio or chem in VCE even if I study them at Monash?

And if I do end up transferring to melb at some point, will I continue my course or start all over again? And if continue, does that mean I have to choose the same subjects that I studied at Monash (cause I'm hoping to study a subject or two that aren't offered at Monash hence why I want to transfer over to UoM)?

I think you can do prerequisites at monash and then transfer mid year to UoM, they will have a look at your ATAR score and Uni scores. Afterwards its just a matter of transferring credits which should not be a problem if it is generic subjects since G08 unis have an agreement on transfers of similar units. I think it is fine if you do the prereqs at monash and then transfer.

You should also consider doing Commerce or Arts or Environmental(dont know what it is) at uni of melb and do 2 units in that field and then do 2 science units (prereqs) required as breadths. You can do opt to transfer to science and transfer all 4 units as the other non science units can be used as breadths. Ive seen alot of my friends transfer via this method as well.

Thanks for your response :)

Also wondering, is it required to do 2 units in commerce/arts/environmental?

I actually planned to do this and fell in love with monash and stayed.

They will count things done at monash long as they're the right things eg bio1011+1022 for bio and chem103x + something i dont remember.

Monash & melbourne are both in the GO8 (group of 8, really just an association that contains the "leading" australian uni's) and have agreements for these kind of things.

UoM will recognise most, if not all, of your subjects done at Monash. So, if you transfer at the end of 1st year, you'll continue onto to second year at UoM. You won't need to do things over again.

Just out of interest, why not stay at Monash?

So I could cover the VCE prerequisites by studying them at Monash?

Well I'd really love to study neuroscience and I feel a bit more secure about doing at major in neuroscience in terms of having a future in that field, rather than something like biology or physiology at Monash which has been suggested by others since I wasn't able to apply to UoM. Unfortunately I didn't choose to do vce chemistry or biology as I didn't expect Behavioural Neuroscience to be taken off the course at Monash which I was initially hoping to do.

Though considering that I want to do a new subject not offered at Monash, would I have to start the science course again? Or continue with the subjects from Monash (e.g. Biology and chemistry) and make a fresh start on neuroscience meaning I'd need an extra year to finish the science course?

There aren't strictly any prerequisites for a Neuroscience major aside from two semesters of first year biology, so you don't have to take anything in particular.  A few electives for the major have second year prerequisites that would require first year prerequisites but I can't see why you wouldn't get exemptions taking equivalent Monash first year subjects.  You don't choose your major until third year at Melbourne - anything you take before third year is entirely up to you.

Monash has neuroscience! Taught by the excellent Ramesh Rajan too (one of the highest rated teahchers in the university, got a bunch of teaching awards, working on a bionic eye).

It's just managed by the physiology department. If i call an orange an apple, it doesn't become an apple, its still an orange. Same idea here.

If UoM is anything like monash, all you really need is first year biology. Most of the first year subjects are insanely general and are called things like "Biology" "Physics" "Chemistry".

They're essentially a generalist course of the kind youd get at VCE (as opposed to like focusing on microbio or organic chem or something).

In past years, they had a chemistry unit that was pretty much VCE (some say easier even). I know plenty who did it.

&

http://www.monash.edu.au/pubs/2012handbooks/units/CHM1042.html

Buttttt.... it doesn't appear to be in the 2013 handbook

See http://monash.edu/pubs/handbooks/courses/0050.html & http://monash.edu/pubs/2013handbooks/units/index-byfaculty-sci.html

CHM1031 & 1042 were kind of easy though and people used it to hop into the regular chemistry chm1011 and chm1022. So, they might of rolled them into one unit. It'll probably be a fair bit harder for you though.

THANK YOU! :) I didn't realise neuroscience was offered in physiology, guess I should have researched a bit more..
Regarding the chemistry units, that information was extremely useful as I was unaware of them discontinuing those units.
I'll reconsider doing chemistry but I'll definitely go with the physiology units which seems like it's offered in second year onwards. Thanks again!!
