What are the chances there is going to be a question in this upcoming exam about the political economy model? Is it new to this years study design and have many of you learnt/understand the model?

Thanks.

Oh I hope not... Have you been given any questions on it? :S
We brushed by it. Didn't really focus on it at all. What did you do for it?

We brushed over it too, but most of it went over everyone's head.

Stickying this until the exam, because I think it's fairly important in that most people wouldn't know about this.

Yeah does anyone that fully understands it care to explain? I'm still having trouble getting my head around it. This wasn't even mentioned in my class this year. I'm guessing it's for Media Influence...?

If I had to interpret what was written on the website from before, I'd say that the political economy model is where organisations such as in the field of politics and sectors in the economy utilise the media to spread around messages. Models are only meant to suggest the relationship between the audience and the media. In this case, the institutions simply use the media.

For more information, there's a small paragraph in the Nelson Media textbook page 388.

I'd like to hear what everyone else thinks this model is about because I would not say that my definition is 100% accurate.

^ Yeah from what I know you are correct. You can also align different theories to political, cultural and effects models. So Agenda Setting is political economy (I think please correct me if I'm wrong)

I didn't think they'd ask students about a specific model because schools focus on different ones? (Although I'm pretty sure every school learns the Hypodermic theory).

The political/cultural/effects traditions can be asked about specifically because they are mentioned in the study design.

"Theories of media influence and communication models are underpinned by academic approaches, including the political economy model, the effects tradition and the cultural studies model."

Compare one theory/model from the effects tradition with one theory/model from the cultural studies model.
Your response must focus on how audiences are understood to use or be used by the media and should make
reference to research or evidence. The space provided below may be used for diagrams or illustrations.

I was totally freaked out when i saw this. Our teacher told us they can't test us about specific models. I had a chat with him and he said not to worry about it and that vcaa can't ask a question like that, do you guys know if they can do this in the exam? Have your teachers made any comments about this?

Haha chill out man, they're not asking for a specific model/theory, rather a specific category.
For example from the Effects Tradition you can mention the Hypodermic Needle Theory, Agenda Setting Theory, Cultivation Theory and talk about passive audience. For example from the Cultural Studies you could mention the Semiotic Constructivist Theory, Reception Model and talk about active audience members.

I was taught the Agenda Setting wasn't effects? :S I thought it was from the political/economy tradition. Hmm, maybe I've learnt something differently...
