I've been doing some stuff from Chem , that I've done in Bio last year , ie . DNA , proteins //

1. In one of the books I was reading it talked about " DNA being a large biomolecule found in chromosomes in the nucleus of every living cell" ? But isn't that untrue (with my biol knowledge) , because prokaryotes dont have membrane bound organelles?

2. When DNA is made into a polymer , why is it a condensation reaction?

3. Do we need to know transcription /translation for VCAA exams in detail?

4. Is it right , that we do not need to know about Forensic Applications of DNA this year ?

Thanks ! :)

Oh and thanks Thush ! :)

Btw you're keen as hell. I like this! Can I tutor you?? :P :P I do like keen beans in my class :P

Let's conceputalise this.

You have a museum.
You have a guide
You have a group of pretty girls.
You have an old man.
You have a boy interested in girls (paul? thush? not sure haha)

The guide is leading the old man and the boy to the museum but somewhere along the road is a group of girls.

The old man has no interest in chasing young girls - he's had a happy, good life so he wants to get to the museum.
-> hence, his attraction to the stationary phase (museum) is stronger than his attraction to the moving girls (mobile phase)

However, that young paul/thush is very strongly attracted to the girls (mobile phase) and won't want to go near the museum.

Now the old man and the boy have been separated. Chromatography works on the principle of relative attractions.

Hope that helped :)

@Homer : So what type of chromatography ? The main principle around chromatography is to separate substances present in a mixture. In chromatography and in all types of chromatography  there is a stationary phase( substance that is in place, which is a surface that has pos and neg regions on surface  and molecules of mixture stick to the surface with electrostatic attraction)   and mobile phase( phase that moves in a definite direction, and it consists of sample being separated/analyzed and the solvent that moves the sample through the column).
I think i forgot to talk about desorption and adsorption . But i cbs. :)
@Kesh: FOR SURE DUDE :) Your really smart :) Just keep the questions coming !!:)

BOTH OF YOU... YES. 35+ , Chem is hard and I have a heap of trouble understanding whats happening .

Tel - that's because you just started the damned course. It takes time to fully understand the concepts rigorously. Give yourself some space. You're being too hard on yourself.

Plus, your understanding is quite solid from what I've seen so far. You're underestimating yourself. Don't do that.

What Thushan said. A the start of last year (and I mean the school year, so you're already ahead of where I was at) I couldn't seem to grasp anything as well as I would have liked. I would get most of the straight up calculation questions, but the explain questions just made no sense to me. This kept going into the first SAC, which I got ~50% on. But then around April/May everything became clearer and I could actually make sense of the chemistry. I ended up winning our school chemistry prize.

I know it nice to set numerical goals for yourself, but more often than not they will change throughout the year. While at this stage you might take a 37 and run, but by the end of the year you may be looking at 45+. This is why I didn't like setting myself study score goals, but less specific goals. In term 2, my goal was wanting to be the student who the other students asked questions. This meant my goal was a solid understanding of the chemistry, not how many marks I get/lose. This took the pressure off, as when I got a question wrong or something I did't think "oh no, if I do that in the exam I will lose a study score point", but was something that I could use to help others.

I'm not saying don't have numerical goals, they can be great motivators. Just make sure that you are able to change them to suit your current circumstances when the time is right.

(Was this even relevant? Just my general thoughts on study score goals lol. Worked for me, maybe not others, who knows. Just do your best :) )
